i own a trek 1.5 tripple and have done about 150 miles on it and beginning to learn to be a roadie...i hope
Tonight while on the middle chain ring with medium pressure on the pedals, it felt that the gear was changing, but it didnt. what is this problem called? is it slipping?
I was looking at my rear derailier the other day and my 3 year old started fiddling with the cable adjuster at the back, is this the cause
Sorry for the stupid question but dont want to go to bike shop with it
thanks in advance

It does sound like the gears slipping & if the barrel adjuster has been fiddled with that is very likely the cause, so not a stupid question at all
Best thing to do IME is to put it in a middle gear then adjust it so it doesn't skip, then you can fine tune the other gears - just be patient as it can seem as though you adjust it one way so gears 1-5 work but 6-10 don't , then you adjust it the other way so now 3-7 work but nothing else does, etc., then repeat to the end of time or your patience, whichever comes first0 -
Could well be the derailler cable. Try standing behind the bike and turning the cable adjuster on the rear derailleur a half of a turn clockwise. This increase the tension in the cable, forcing the derailleur inwards towards the wheel hub. Lift the wheel of the ground and "pedal" with your hand to see if this helps. If not, turn adjust again. Alternatively, turn the adjuster in the other direction. Have a look on Youtube. There a several good gear adjusting videos which explain things a lot better than I can0

Surely it's anti clockwise to increase tension ie wind the barrel out.Norfolk, who nicked all the hills?

I've only done 30 miles in mine and have had to adjust after each ride as the cables stretch. Doubt a 3 year old could turn the adjuster though.2010 Trek 1.5 Road - swissstop green, conti GP4000S

30 miles & you've had to adjust it after each ride (out of interest, how many rides is that??)?
Sounds like you need to take it back to the bike shop - there's no way cables should stretch that much! :shock:0
