Hi, I've got a budget of 500 to spend on a bike and looking for something that could stand a few upgrades over the next year or two. I'm 6 ft 5 so need a decent sized frame! I've seen a gt avalanche on Pauls cycles and the decathlon 8.1 for the same price.

Does anyone have any recommendations or advice? my knowledge on individual parts is limited so any input will be much appreciated!

  • if you can find one, the carrera fury is really well specced for the money, but im not sure how many larges there are about. i do know theres one in the store near me as a display, but i think they are pretty few n far between, just another bike to consider.
  • Decathlon rockrider 8.1 as you've said is great, but I'd reccoment the GT aggressor XC2 from Halfords, it was at £400 online, and the XC1 (even better) at £500. They cant really be matched on spec, for bikes under £500. They have my vote. I have one!

Jee-sus you're tall. My GT's medium frame is a little large for me and I'm 5"8, so the Large should be fine. The plus side with them is that you can physically try one!

This, biggest frame i could find and if i'm not mistaken the same one as the fury so very upgradable, rubbish forks though.

Hence these, and your still around your £500 budget. Simples.

Never argue with an idiot, he'll only drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
  • That 22" Kraken might be a good route to go. I think the Fury only goes up to 20" (could be wrong though) and it might be a little small for you.

I'm 6'1" with a 34" inside leg and ride a 20" Fury and it's a perfect size for me, I can't help thinking a 20 is going to come up quite short on you. Obviously, trying one is going to be vital.

I can heartily recommend the Fury, it keeps up very well with much more expensive machinery and handles the abuse that I give it not to mention the unforgiving peak district.

Good luck finding the right bike.
