I used them for years and liked them a lot. Great on dry, rocky and dusty trails, but are slidy in the wet. Roll fast though. Good for those who want a largish volume, light, fast rolling tyre for drier conditions.0
-
I have also used but really didn't like them, far too sketchy on the front.
Ok on the rear if you want a hugh volume tyre that doesn't stick to that much0 -
hmmmmmm, thanks for the replies guys. i'm not sure about them now with the winter coming up. i read the write up about them and they said they're good in all conditions.
don't believe the hype hey0 -
I think they're spot on for the money. When they break away its in a nice controlled maner. Although I'm starting to get a bit cocky with it now- I'll wash out on the next ride!0

I had the protection black chilli version on the front for a good while and thought it was great - really grippy in pretty much all conditions - similar tread pattern to maxxis ignitors but they don't come up quite as big.0
-
I found them to be very grippy on pretty much everything except deep gloopy mud.
BUT, the terrain round here was just tearing chunks out of them, and causing massive gouges/gashes.0 -
cheers guys, yeah i looked at the tread pattern and saw that they were similar to the ignitors that's why i thought they might be a viable alternative.
Yeehaa:
i think you have a lot of slate and stuff by you don't you? although my area is quite rocky it's not too hard wearing i don't think. i've had my ignitors for 18 months and am only now needing to change them0 -
There's a lot of slate, yes, but it's the flint, and sharp rocks that were damaging the Verticals.
Nothing lasts long in the slate, but I usually get about a year out of my tyres otherwise.0 -
i think i'm gonna get them, sod it for 27 quid it's worth a chance0
-
i got the verticals and used them the other day, really good tyres i think. i can't tell the difference between them and the ignitors i had before.
i got them for a bargain price of £23 the pair new0 -
Ah, I'm glad this thread is back. I've been contemplating fitting some conti vertical "black chilli" recently, and couldn't figure out why. Turns out it was this thread that got me thinking!
I've been told the black chilli should be a little tougher.0 -
vertical protections are the best tyres i have ever had, found them to be great in all conditions, got some ignitors now but haven't used them yet but still thinkin of getting some more verticals too0
-
why are the black chilli at 745g heavier than the wire beads? the old protections were 630g?? is the soft compound heavier?0
-
Apparently, they don't make a black chilli vertical tyre. Gutted.
Never mind, I bought a 2.4 mountain king black chilli today, so will give it a thorough pounding in the coming months.
First impressions are good, the rubber feels sort of hard, but if you dig your nail into it, it's as soft as chewing gum, which, in a round about kind of way, is waht they claim.0 -
I have not ridden the Vertical but I have just binned a pair of Explorers (same pattern smaller tyre) they lasted 2 years, not on the bike the whole time as I only used them as a dry tyre! Have replaced with a pair of Mountain King 2.2 Supersonics (black chilli), all I can say is ooohhhh baby, have reduced my lap time on my local loop by about 10%.
They felt a bit sketchy at first as I run them at a high pressure to avoid punctures so they skipped over things, but if you trust the chilli they grip and grip and grip some more.
Only lost it once on a really muddy off camber corner, I should have known better but once you start to trust the tyres they feel like they will never let go.
Just worried how long they will last as they already have some tread damage.
I am sure I saw a pair of Vertical Protection Black Chillis in Geoff Wiles Cycles in Strood Kent, didn't pay that much attention to them as I bought a pair of MK 2.4's last year and they didn't clear the front mech so I have decided 2.2's are about the biggest I will get away with.0 -
Oh no, I've just bought a Mountain King Protection black chilli 2.4. I thought the chilli compound would mean they lasted better, and would be more robust than the old verts. DAMN!
And you're right, there IS a vertical black chilli. I'm sure when I checked conti's website the other day, there wasn't :oops:0 -

The vertical black chilli was a limited edition tyre0 -
i rode the verticals at coed trawllm on the weekend and they held up pretty well in the mud. one of the lads said "look at kev's tyres it looks like he's riding a different trail to us" there's were all caked up with gloopy mud and mine were shedding mud really well and still sticking
i think they might have slowed me on the climbs though (i did check the rotation to see if i'd put them on backwards more than once) but i did seem to struggle more than when i had on the ignitors0
