See, I hate Mark King with a Passion, and all other slap-bassists.
Listen to Jaco Pastorius and/or Victor Wooten and they'll probably change your mind
I know of Victor wooten well. I admire his technical ability, like King's but I still don't like the slappy bass. It's just bollocks.
Wooten is at his best when he's playing bass, not slapping his strings.

Now, Bootsy Collins, there was a great bassist. Some of the basslines he came up with just exude class, and are the definition of funky.

    Was?
    He's still alive
Bootsy still makes good music; he rolls out on lots of collaboration albums every year

Bootsy is the king of melodic slap-bass (Flea lovers, take note)

As for you saying slap is basically "bollocks", I'll attribute that to your lack of interest; slap-bass is generally done poorly by cheese musicians the world over, but who takes them seriously? Not me

Yeah, I don't know why I put was instead of is.
Very odd. Freudian slip or something.
No, I don;t like slap-bass, because it isn't bass. I want a solid, grooving bottom end, not some fricking plinky plonk bollocks.

The thing is, I'm not a fan of level 42, or slap bass really, but I admire the skill behind it, and also Listening to Mark King talk about the bass, and his reasons and passions for it, my personal favourite bassist is mani from the stone roses/primal scream I also like Tom Hamilton from aerosmith. For me tho Mark King is to bass what of Mark Knopfler is to guitar for me, the only difference being Dire Straits are my favourite band ever.

I suppose its kind of like what I was taught when I did my wine tasting certificate in this case, its not about what you like or dont like, its about being able to spot and appreciate the quality there. I'm not saying any of you guys are wrong by the way in that statement

You don't have a solid bottom in you to groove.
