Ive not been a great descender - and struggle to stay with the group on descents. last week or so - I have been practising on the drops - rather than the brake hoods - Ive a way to go yet - but it does seem to help.
  • The latter.

But your position on the bike may not be helping.

But seriously, if you want to be good at downhills, you need to not be scared. Otherwise, if it's still horrible for you, since it's a hobby and not your job, sod trying to be good at descending!

    +1 for truth..

if you like the speed and the rush, do it, if not, ease off and enjoy feeling of the strength flow back into your legs.

Personally im nothing short of retarded when it comes to descents, so I pedal till I spin out whilst tucking down and watching for road furniture to avoid. So far(tm) not had a problem.

There is a particularly lovely road that leads from Bexleyheath into Crayford and on this I dont stop pedalling till Im in Dartford. I top out 40mph on the main descent.

  • Update - dropped the saddle a full 3cm (trading off some efficiency for a less precarious position on the drops), put a 13cm 7deg stem on the bike, tilted the saddle back a bit, and practiced things it a bit.. still room for improvement, but at least I'm no longer falling off the back of the group on the downhills & can get past 30mph without brown shorts. Thanks for the help all!
