Any suggestions on the best way to cycle from Canary Wharf to Greenwich/Blackheath between 6 am & 7 am . Understand that the Greenwich foot tunnel is completely closed and the Thames ferry service starts is at 07.27 . Assistance appreciated. thanks in advance

  • The only way round that conundrum as far as I can tell is cycling along to Silvertown, getting the Woolwich Ferry which starts at 6.00am and then cycling back to Greenwich - I don;t think it would take too much longer as long as you don't have to wait too long for a ferry.

I don't think you're going to find a particularly direct route TBH (had forgotten the gwich tunnel was going to be closed) - the options that spring to mind are either in to Tower Bridge then east on CS3, or out to the woolwich foot tunnel and west along CS3.

Or, if you're feeling brave and have a mask thingy, through the rotherhithe tunnel? It brings you out about 10 mins from CW, although I must confess I've never cycled it...
  • I did the Rotherhithe tunnel once - it was about the third scariest thing I've ever done, which is why I didn;t mention it as an option.

I know a few that have, none have sold the experience to me, it has to be said ;-)
  • I thought the stairs are now out on the north and south side but both the lifts are operating. So the tunnel should still be open. But if one of the lifts breaks down then they have said they will shut the tunnel.

The chaps in the lift have suggested using oyster to use ferry across on those occasions the tunnel is unexpectedly closed.

I will instead be riding along the blue route as mentioned before from Canary Wharf to Tower Bridge. Then along Jamaica Road and through Surrey Quays and then onto the Greenwich one way system.

At that time in the morning I can't imagine there's too much traffic.
shame the rider doesn't match the bike...

Appreciate the local knowledge. Its only for a few days but looks like the blue route/tower bridge is the way to go . thanks again

I will make a perverse & off the wall suggestion here...

Ride to Poplar by the Blackwall Tunnel and get on the 108 with your bike, through the tunnel to North Greenwich, off, then carry on cycling.

Buses run every 15 mins or so and journey takes 6 or so minutes.

    Poplar, Blackwall Tunnel 0128 minutes 58 28 0458 0518 0538 0558 0613 0629 0645 0656 0707 0718 0729 0739
    North Greenwich Station 0134 at 04 34 0504 0524 0544 0604 0619 0635 0652 0703 0714 0725 0736 0746

I'm sure you won't get agro for taking your bike on at that time of the morning and will save you loads of time :)

I know of someone who commutes from Greenwich to Canary Wharf by canoe. Maybe you could fit a bike rack :D
  • The Woolwich foot tunnel is stairs only on the North side. At least the lifts are operating 24 hours a day on the south side. Lift operator there at 3:00 in the morning is not a job I would fancy.
