Whilst out on a ride on Holiday I passed here :- http://tinyurl.com/2bbhouf and you can see there is a tank just off the road. Anyone know what type of tank it was ?

I guess you would need to see the gear box to confirm that it was French. 1 forward gear and 3 reverse would do it, or just 4 reverse gears would indicate an Italian one.

A bit like the British tanks that were stuck in reverse all the way back to Dunkirk

Surely if it WAS French, wouldn't have it a slimey snails-trail left behind it?

    Don't think it's French, I don't see a white flag anywhere :)
  • Looks like a AMX-30 Main battle tank, Manufactured by Giat Industries (France), Produced in the mid 70s. Crew of 4 and weighed about 35.5 tons.

The main armament is a 105mm Smoothbore gun and a secondary 20mm cannon. Over 3,500 were built, it had a range of 280 miles and a top speed of 41mph

2 stroke engines, can choose between having a box full of reverse and box full or forward depending on what way you crank it.

There's one hanging about on a road in Kincardineshire but I can't remember where so can't get it's location on Google Earth. :-(

ask your friend if he knows the main visual difference between a T54 and a T55....(without googling it)... ;)

Doddle. The turrets are different, the T55 doesnt have a cupola hatch on the turret. the other one is the T55 was fitted with a barrel adjacent searchlight, but this can't de distinguishing as a lot of T54's had these retro-fitted.

    I love tanks, me. :D

not quite - the T54 had a turret ventilator fitted, which the T55 didn't...not aware of any difference on the hatches...

One of my mates was in the Duke of Boots regiment and was seconded to the weapons inspection unit at the MOD.

He told me once that one of the ways that countries manage the number of tanks they have is to fit a ruddy great bolt that blocks the turret from turning through 360deg...it is therefore a mobile gun and not a tank.

Glad to see that the same attitude found in F1 teams is alive and kicking in the military
  • Seen 1:6 RC model tanks, really expesive and need a pallette truck to move them about..200kg
