Researchers at the University of Kent (Medway Park, Chatham, Kent) and Canterbury Christ Church University (North Holmes Road, Canterbury, CT1 1UQ) are seeking to recruit trained cyclists and untrained individuals for a research study. The study aims to determine the degree to which age affects cycling performance. Specifically, the study seeks to establish genetic traits and physiological mechanisms associated with the maintenance of submaximal exercise performance by studying both young and masters cyclists, as well as young and old untrained individuals. By volunteering to participate, you would be required to attend either the Exercise Testing Laboratory at the University of Kent or that at Canterbury Christ Church University (North Holmes Road, Canterbury, Kent) on four separate occasions.

We are looking to recruit 56 males. Four groups are required: those who are aged 18-30 for the ‘young’ group; and those aged 50-75 for the ‘masters’ group. We are looking for individuals in two categories for each age group; either you should be a competitive cyclist who has been regularly training and competing over the past 5 years; or an untrained recreationally active individual who is not involved in a regular training regime. Regardless of group, you must be a non-smoker, free of symptoms of heart disease, diabetes or any disability that will make it difficult for you to cycle.

As a results of taking part in this study you will have a comprehensive fitness assessment with feedback report, and will be under the instruction of experts in their field.
