Got the cheaper RS 80s as a spare wheelset. Very pleased with their performance for £320.( Have heard some problems with squeaks from other posters.) 8)

+1 - I know a few people who have these (from my reccomendation..) & I have never heard of any of them, or anyone anywhere in fact, saying there are "squeaking" issues apart from one person on this forum

Aaah, that's why they've raised the price normally then...
  • You could also have a look at some handbuilt wheels. I think I paid about £600 for some Tune 70/180 hubs on Kinlin XR-300 rims (30mm deep clincher) with Sapim CX-Ray spokes. Came out at just under 1400g (so about 50g lighter than the DA's) for 20/24.

I used to use the old Dura Ace wheels that were a bit heavier than those and had to wait ages for a repair when one of the spokes snapped. Handbuilt wheels, on the other hand, are a lot easier to get repaired. Having said that, I've had these for almost a year and haven't needed anything doing so far...

Though to be honest, the main reason I swapped was that I wanted some good all-round wheels with a deeper section to match the aero design of my frame.

When I had the DA wheels though, I was very happy with them. So whichever you choose to go with, I'm sure you'll be satisfied.

I've had these particular DA Wheels and I have a front hand made IRD Cadence rim built up on Extralight hub. Weight of the DAs was 1382g.

The DAs feel fantastic, my handbuilt front is as light as the DA but doesn't feel anywhere near as smooth, is less aero and doesn't look as bling.

The Shimano spokes are easily replaceable (not that I ever needed to replace any, and I was 95kg when running them...)
  • NapoleonD, do you think it was the lightweight hub or the rim choice that made the wheel feel less smooth? And did you use the aero or the normal depth rim?

By the way, Tune hubs can look pretty bling as well :D:

Also, just had a look at your blog. Very nice S2 - that's my favourite colour scheme for it. I even briefly considered having the white on my 09 S1 painted black, but I was put off by the cost and the fact that it would look like I was pretending to ride an S2 .

Though I do like this guy's custom paint scheme as well:

Normal depth rim, and I think it was the rim that made it less smooth, the DA carbon laminate rims are the smoothest rolling I've ever tried. (Same tyres and pressures used BTW...)

I just think handbuilts in general look a bit bland, particularly from side on where you can't see the hubs...

That's not to say I don't like them, on the contrary!
  • Are the 7900 due out anytime soon?
  • Get those wheels. I've just put a set onto my Principia and ridden for the first time today. Very, very smooth rolling and not too shabby looking either. Best £412.00 I've spent.

  • Where/How did you get them for £412 !!!!
  • For £412, it sounds like the 7850SL, which is a different wheel.....the clinchers in question around the £500 mark are the the ali/carbon composite rim ones...

Of course this could be wild speculation on my part, if they are the same wheels for £412, I will hopefully be somewhere near the front of the queue to order a set this afternoon.
  • As will I . I have sent silverpigeon a PM to clarify
  • The DA cls are great wheels.....especially when you get them for £375 :D, i bought mine from ebay (new) and have been very happy with them
  • Ahh yes I should clarify. They are CL's, you can see them on my post in the 'show us you bikes' forum

And yes £412 BUT No VAT payable you see..... I live in the Channel Islands

  • I got the RS80's. If they CL's are better by a percentage that matches the price percentage difference then they must be mind blowing, cos my RS80's are!

Off topic, but I freakin' love your bike!!
  • Thanks Nap D, I know you like Principia's, and they do make an amazing Al frame. I had the day of work today and rode it for about 60 miles - and that's quite a feat on a island that's only 27 sq miles - suffice it to say I didn't want it to get dark.

I have to say I am an admirer of your own collection. That Colnago you just bought is gorgeous

Cheers... Wait till it's finished ;)

I think the 7800 with that colour on yours is such a perfect match, the chainset looks brill with it!

Would you Guys, Girls say that these wheels are a better wheel say over Camoag Shamal's, Eurus, or Fulcrum 1, etc I have heard nothing but good reviews about these DA wheels.

Well, the DAs are lighter and more aero, but the killer for the Campags is that it is such a pain to get tyres onto them. Really puts me off.
  • another one for the DA CL 24 - great wheels, i did go through a period of wanting to change but kept with them and glad i did.

thinking of some RS80 for training ..
  • There is a new version of these wheels coming out in November .... http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/content/global_cycle/en/nl/index/news_and_info/news/new_dura_ace_wheels.html - Haven't seen any reviews yet

I assume these will be the same but with new graphics...
  • Don't know - but from the weight listed in the info - they may be slightly heavier - I guess they've just tweaked the design a little?

They upped the described weight on the original when they had to be used with rim tape when there were puncture issues when originally released IIRC...
