Plannig a ride to incorparate Jacobs ladder see here
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=268739935301
My question is which is the best way to ride over Jacobs Ladder, East to West or West to East? I have found a ride starting from Edale that includes Jacobs Ladder thats 18 miles and one that starts from the west thats 22. Also any other good rides that include Jacobs Ladder please let me know details, gpx, web address etc.
Cheers
Simon

The classic Edale loop(Jacobs Ladder)starts in either Edale or Hayfield and goes clockwise. We start in Edale because it's closer and you finish the ride with the descent of Jacobs. If you start in Hayfield it's basically the same but you do Jacobs at the beginning of the ride.
The difference between the 18 an 22 is just an extra bit past Kinder reservoir which can be a real bog/slog after rain.
Probably my favourite Peak route.
If you want a gpx file PM your email address and I'll sort you one out.
We're doing it on the weekend of 25/26th0 -
If you enjoy riding down steep rubble piles, then ride down Jacobs.
If you don't then walk up it and do the long down into Hayfield.0 -
imo,i would rather walk/ride up jacobs ladder,as i find the downhill on other side easier, its longer and more rideable....as im not into big drop offs and riding a wall of unrideable rock(imo,again)......when we ride it,we find its more enjoyable to do what i said,as i think you will find ride up other side is more of a push then pushing up ladder(imo)....suppose at end of day,it depends on what you can ride.....0
-
I prefer going up Jacobs and back down into Hayfield, if you prefer your dowhills longer and faster this is the best way if you like steep and technical then go down jacobs0

Maybe, but if you do the classic loop backwards you go up the fun bit of Roych Clough and up the fun bit of Rushup edge. The descents are better if you do it the 'correct' way round.
Jacobs aint over too quick,, it is technical, but the 'drops' are rollable anyway.
The descent into Hayfield, while pretty long apart from a few sections would be pretty dull IMO. I do enjoy rocky tech tho', so each to their own.
Plus if you go down Jacobs, the farm track at the end can be fun if you relay the gates, a fast blast before the pub.0 -

This - although the water bars on that track nearly caught me out a few times the last time I rode it!
Ridden it both ways and can't decide which I prefer, they both have their pros and cons - riding the classic way it does feel like you earn the JL descent at the end because of all the climbing leading up to it and through the ride.0 -

I'm sure Jacobs is a great downhill, but it's very short and over too quickly.
Jacobs short?
From the top to the stream crossing it's 1.4km!altern_8 wrote:as im not into big drop offs and riding a wall of unrideable rock(imo,again)..
As Ratty2k mentioned if you do it the other way around and you're going UP 3 of the best descents of the ride,Coldwell Clough,The Roych and Rushup Edge.
Classic loop everytime for me0 -
like i said guys, just my opinion...maybe im mad in some sort of way,but i find it a challenge trying to ride up jacobs ladder....and we will all have our fav ways of including it in a route.as hoochylala said, has its pro's and con's which ever way you ride it.0
-
cheers guys you have made it so much clearer .0
-
glad we could clear that up for you now, hardtail or full suss?0

Ridden once (doing again on Sunday ) the classic way (down JL).
No way I would want to ride it the other as Coldwell Clough,The Roych and especially Rushup Edge descents are fantastic.
My mates have done it once both ways and they all said that clockwise is by far the best way round (Down JL).
And HT as that's all I've gotMongoose Tyax Super 2008 with just a few upgrades...0 -
Done it on a full rigid Saracen with V-brakes(back in the day) then a HT but more recently has been a FS.I'm currently building a HT so I'll give it a go again.Should be fun haven't ridden a HT for about 8years0
