"District 9". Classic or rubbish?

Watched it last night, and at face-value it's a great film with a different type of story.
Graphics were pretty good, though don't know how the humans understood the Aliens.
But...there was "something" missing, can't quite put my finger on it.
Storyline, plot, editing, just something in the back of my mind.
Any ideas?
( I'm gonna get Booby's or even Alien Booby's replies now, aren't I ? )

FOK!!!
I enjoyed it lots. Want a continuation of the story, though anything more would change the 'mood' - like Alien to Aliens.
Is good, well made and had an actual story.0 -
Agree, but still feel a lack of "something".
Probably got used to the Hollywood polish, but still think "Aliens", the 1st one, was better.
Blade Runner too set the standard for great Anti-heroes as well.
I'm gonna have to watch it again, to see if I can get it...

I've seen the TV documentary 3 times as well.

I enjoyed it. It was something a bit different.
And I agree, Fok! and Fokn! is the best pronuciation I've ever heard.0 -
Yep, great expletive stylee!
Who said the Dutch/Germans never gave anything to the culture of "Sowd Afreekar?"0 -
"CHRISTOPHER-R-R-R".
I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were some excellent CGI bits and some cracking one liners but I know what you mean Splottboy. There isn't any significant character development as such so you don't feel particularly involved emotionally. However, on the plus side, it does have guys shouting "You fokking prawns" and a gun that makes people go "SPLUTCH".
I'd definitely watch a sequel.Happy trails.0 -
Can't beat a bit of Afrikaans rapping

Yes.. two things:
1 - Why did the ship stop and why were the "prawns" so servile, even though they had awesome firepower?
2 - Why Johannesburg of all places?
District 9 is based on Alive in Jo'burg a short film made by Neill Blomkamp
Peter Jackson saw this short film, read the full script, funded and helped produce "District 9" and it was directed by Neill Blomkamp
In fact they retained a lot of the original cast from the sort film
CGI in District 9 was done by a few different CGI companies to give the film a different look and feel, so one company rendered the prawns whilst others did the ships etc. - just like in the short film
So.. to answer the questions:
1 - The prawns are insects and therefore are a collective. The queen had died so they lost focus. They do what insects would do in nature. Stop and embark on a breeding program until a queen is spawned
2 - Johannesburg is over 2000M above sea level, so the ship can maintain hovering altitude whilst being as close to the ground as possible.
Other trivia: The Nigerian government were "offended" by the film
The white mine proof (wedge shaped) armoured vehicles are "Caspirs" and were used by the riot police during and post Apartheid to ferry police to trouble areas (This was the vehicle Wikus was traveling in)
The soldiers battalion markings were from 1 S.A. Infantry, right down to the Kudu head logo on the vehicles.
Lastly, somewhat reminiscent of the Apartheid era, all the prawns were tarred with the same brush and believed to be "stupid and servile" however... as we found out they weren't..0 -
I'm guessing the big prawn was like a Nelson Mandela figure, ie the Boss?0

No, you've lost the plot. The film was not a direct comparison to or with "Mandela" and Apartheid. The underlying message was that the black majority had gained freedom and equality, but themselves chose to look down at and persecute the prawns. Also the forced relocation was something practiced during Apartheid0 -

Don't let the kids/dogs get in the way of the subtitles, or you'll lose the plot.
Apparently, I may have!0 -
