Shimano 9 speed cassette/10 speed shifters compatability?
Can you use a 9-speed cassette with 10-speed shifters?
Due to a rear-wheel spoke breaking last week I'm without my rear-wheel for a few days whilst the LBS repairs it so the only way I can go for a ride is to use the wheels off my hybrid (Mavic Aksiums) but it only has a 9-speed cassette (Tiagra possibly - didn't look) - will this work with my 105 10-speed shifters? Only need it for a few days.
Thanks

Hi, it works for me but you need to tighten the high limit screw so that the last click doesn't move the derailleur, apart from the extra click it's fine.Smarter than the average bear.0

It won't work. At all.
9 speed cassettes are the same width as 10 speed cassettes. Therefore, each click of the 10 speed shifter moves the mech slightly less than each click of a 9 speed shifter. You might get one or two gears working ok, but certainly not all of them.
The only thing you can do is to swap the 10 speed cassette onto the other wheel.0 -
Are you speaking from experience or theory because i'm speaking from experience and it works perfectly for me?Smarter than the average bear.0
