Right I've chosen the frame, a Casati Vinci. Now for the chainset, can anybody give me an idiots guide or point me to a link outlining the pro's and con's of a triple, double and compact?

Cheers.

A triple will look fcuk-ugly. A normal double is the one to go with if you are reasonably strong, then choose the cassette combination according to the terrain you'll be riding. If you think you will ride loads of hills and struggle then consider a compact - this will give you a range of small gears without making your bike an eyesore.

  • Triples are useful, after all what if you riding along and come to a hill? Go to the side, swop over shifters, chainset, bottom bracket and derailler and then ride up the hill.

If you want or need a triple go for it. Don't let the double snobs think they're better. I remember back when I was a kid others with BMX taking the mick. I had a three speed. We had a race and I won. lol. No mick taking after that.

Although saying that I think a double is enough, but there's still a but. For example carrying home lots of shopping up a hill I definietly needed the granny ring.

Small ring weighs about 80grams so is nothing, heaviest is the largest ring of course and you're not going to remove that to save weight.

Who cares if others think if your bike is an eyesore? A triple doesn't make a bike a eyesore. And anyone who thinks that, well it doesn't matter what they think.
    Say... That's a nice bike..

I beg to differ. A triple is fugly. But then again, I'm not going to look down my nose at anyone who has one, just pointing out the aesthetics.
