here the issue: this chainset is 1500m old but the big ring teeth are shot to pieces and irregular, yet the small ring are pristine - why - they both get the same use?

the bike and chainset were brand new together - why has the happened?
something I have done?, a defect?
do I need to replace , and if I do what stops this happening again?

The big ring teeth look less worn to me than those on the the small ring.

The teeth are irregular to aid shifting. When they are worn they become pointy.

    +1

If the teeth were worn they'd be more "buzz" saw shaped. Many riders think their teeth are broken or worn when in fact they are there the aid shifting and also help clean the gunk off the chain.

  • the teeth look ok for a good few thousand more miles yet but your chain looks a bit rusty and dry on the pic, keep it well lubed, because once you get a stiff link due to corrosion they wont last very long and a dry chain will wear the rings out fast.

Rust! the very thought of it! certainly not - I bike gears and chain are stripped and cleaned and relubricated every 2 weeks here because of the saline air, fine sand and TSE (irrigation water - not pleasant)

So I apreciaated your advice and put the rust suggestion down to my cr4p camera skills - better and smaller image attached.

Looks perfectly normal. The squared-off teeth aid shifting.

Those chainrings are fine. Have a look at some brand-new ones – you'll see the tooth profiles are the same.
