Very fitting for the French Champ to win and a typical poacher win. Looked painful that last km. So many of them must be kicking themselves.
  • Voeckler

    Woooooooooooooooooooooo

    Sig line

    And EBH in 2nd

    Hmm....

Canadian hero riding in a break that's caught late.
French national champ is then allowed to ride away with 500m to go.

I doubt they could've scripted it better for the local fans...

    Good race. Sort of WC'ish.

    Lovely course too.

It maybe a newfangled creation of the UCI, but I thought that was pretty good race, particularly the last 10km. A trademark gambler's move from TV Tommy paying-off.

looking forward to Montreal. i think the course looks tougher.. so let see.
  • If that guy Wegmann had taken a pull then very possible it would have been from those 5. No respect for the guys that don't pull. You can argue that they don't pull so they are fresher in the finish but you need to get to the finish in the first place. He was obviously bluffing too as he was in top ten.

The Montreal course on Sunday is almost an identical clone of the Geelong WC course.

You mean like the way Voeckler rode? Presumably he wasn't dragging the peloton along all day.

  • To accuse Voeckler of similar tactics is so so lame. Voeckler is almost the exact opposite in that he does too much on the front, but he is very very well liked by the fans.

    Remember this?

Well, today he sat in the peloton, until jumping out near the end. Yet that's OK?

I am trying to make the point that the way you win bike races is to pedal as little as possible, until you have to. Then pedal as hard as you can.

All this stuff about respect and taking your turn is so lame.

  • So what in your opinion is better:

Making an effort to get into a break with about 10km to go. Sit on and do nothing to help the group's chances. Because of your lack of effort, and maybe others like you, the group is caught and you don't win or even podium.

Making an effort to get into a break with 10km to go. Work as hard as everyone else who are all working hard. Don't get caught and have to contend with only four other people for the win and at the very least take 5th.

When you are in a peloton, it is a different story - then I don't think you need to ride on the front. That is part of what domestiques do so that the person with the most likely chance in their team of winning is as fresh as possible. Getting into a break and doing no work is not only annoying to the other memebers of that group, it is annoying for people like me watching and it hampers the group's and thus your chances of winning.

FF, you can't generalise like that and say one tactic is always better than another. Cycling tactics are fluid - no two situations are ever the same, and the rider just does what he feels is best for any given situation.

You singled out Wegmann, who is normally one of the hardest working breakaway specialists in the entire peloton. Anyone who has ever seen that clip of him when he was chasing Bettini in the Tour of Lombardy knows that he is not a slacker. Maybe he just didn't have the legs today. Maybe the team told him not to work. Maybe they were waiting for Gerdemann. Maybe he thought he had a better chance of attacking later on if he sat on for a bit. There is nothing wrong with that. You do what you have to do to win.

Not saying Fabian is a wheelsucker generally. I know how he races. Fact was he did just that this race and I didn't like it, especailly when he had legs enough to top ten - he could maybe have had a top 5 if he had worked.

Great win by Voeckler, if I had a FF type sig line held be in it. Did the kung fu kick get punished? Surely worse than Renshaw's head work at the Tour? Also wasn't it Mike Smith commentating rather than Carlton?
