I have a second cycle2work voucher from Halfords for a measley £500!! i received a bike from them last year (mountain bike) for the same value in which i struggled to get anything decent as im sure you could imagine!! However this year i am desperate to get started on the tarmac and i am having even worse luck picking up anything decent as i did last year!
i have been looking high and low for a decent £500 road bike and i got pretty excited when i came across a Ribble 7005 (steel) going for £500. The problem i have is that Ribble wont take halfords vouchers and Halfords wont source from ribble (they stopped this last year apparently  ) i am desperate as i have my heart set on this bike as its head and shoulders above anything else on the market (specwise) for this price range and it looks lovely in blue and black!

Has anyone had a similar problem and managed to over come it?? and before anyone asks i have'nt got £500 to spend up front :(

Hope someone can help!!!!!!!!

  • A Ribble 7005 isn't steel, if that influences your decision...

I personally wouldn't give the ungrateful poster any advice. Try finding £500 of his own money.
    I like white bikes
  • I certainly was'nt trying to sound ungrateful i was simply trying to ask advice on a tricky problem! But thankyou Sundog on that friendly and very helpful comment! you can always rely on some cyclists going that extra mile to give a new cyclist some expert advice. Trust me if i had the ability to pay £500 i would at a drop of a hat!

I bought the Carrera TDF a couple of months ago and it is a great starter bike. It will be a long time before I am fitter than the bike. Why not get the vanquish and enjoy riding. Put a few quid a week away and if you are still riding in a year go and buy your dream bike.

How can you not get a decent mountain bike for £500 ? Carrera Kraken for one.

If your that desparate to hit the tarmac - the bike shouldn't matter to much. Some really fit youngsters in our club ride really low end bikes - they blow me out of the water on my bike costing loads more ....as someone once said 'Its not about the bike'

With autumn approaching, does it have to be now, now, now, ? - can't you save a couple of hundred over the winter ? - or get a credit card that gives 12 months interest free on purchases ? - Pay it off over 12 months ...simples.

If you really are stuck with £500 - decathlon do damm good budget road bikes at the price.

Have a look at the Boardman stuff, the range gets great reviews and there are a lot of guys on here with them.

My sister has a Boardman Hybrid and my Dad is about to buy the same bike. I've been out on it and it's great !
