A former boss of mine has made allot of his subordinates "friends" on Facebook:

1 such subordinate has a problem at work and vents anger on a status update on FB. Boss puts comment on their too...below subordinates FB update.

However, boss fails to deal with situation in office that lead to FB comment by subordinate, and has failed to deal with it for 3 years previously....or post the incident.

Former boss also has: 5 grievences raised against them - 4 of them upheld and 1 ongoing (from what I hear)? Would you employ them?

Is that gross negligence or am I really harsh?

Should people managers make friends with subordinates and colleagues on FB? Personally, I think not!

Add colleagues if they are actually friends. Don't add if they're not.

    Simples.
  • if your a manager with subordinates as friends then any problems posted about work shouldnt be replied to on there it should be addressed in work as typed words are so often misinterpreted

being "friends" with them on there can be a good thing as you get to know a lot more about them or say their performance drops, their facebook status may give you indication why, maybe family problems etc

me personally i only add people who i either spend time with outside of work as friends or have common ground with other than work hobbies/interest etc & never talk about work

This, absolutely. The clue is in the word "friends", surely?

My line reports are not my FB friends. Too much scope for trouble.
  • Basically don't put anything on facebook that you wouldn't want you employer or any future employer seeing.

It's well practiced now that employers check for people on social networking sites.

So those student pictures of you being sick into a bin may seem harmless but if you were an employer and had two candidates of perfectly equal standing who would you choose? The one being sick in a bin or the one who has taken a picture of himself at the top of Ben Nevis (for example)?

The one being sick in a bin, they sound a right laugh; especially compared to billy-no-mates who "...has taken a picture of himself".
  • I expect not many human resource departments would agree.

It was just an example to highlight what could easily happen and not a statement of fact.

Hmm - I manage quite a few people now.

Although I am up for going out on work nights out, letting hair down, playing sports with a few colleagues (squash and five-a-side) and cycling with a few too - I won't add them on FB, quite simply, I may have to fire them for misconduct, make them redundant, have a disciplinary process against myself from a member of staff or against them. Everyone needs a place to vent - FB is one of them and I won't intrude on thier right to say what they want there.

I have to maintain a distance, socially, but I can be involved in allot of activities.

I just don't think my former boss gets people management.....certainly not with grievences raised against him.
  • People I know have their employer listed on their profile - could this be seen as bringing your company into disrepute ? I dont know but I certainly dont want to find out

Possibly, but if you've got nothing to hide (from your employer/wife/etc), what's the worry?

    Stalking is slightly different, obviously.

People need to have the sense not add anyone they ever met as a friend on fb, I have ignored numerous requests from people I went to school with and loads from work as I don't want them knowing what I'm up to.

fb's new features erode this more all the time (letting you know what friends have said to aothers who aren't your friends). I will close account when it becomes too open, they openly admit that they want the default as social (all can see everything) damn extraverts.

I have two facebook accounts one for business one for social.

    The two aren't linked.

  • I like FB, I am happy for my friends to see everything, and for Friends of Friends to see some stuff too.

I have no colleagues on there as they are not my friends. I do not socialise with them, so do not add them. Simples.

You really need to watch the South Park episode about Facebook. I think it sets out the reasons I don't have an account quite nicely :-)

You are taking on a rather large challenge this weekend, plus you are a member of one of Scotland's best Mountain Bike Clubs. That is rather a lot to start shouting about!!

  • I can't believe this many people aren't friends with their co-workers!

If you really don't want anybody to see a certain status update there is an option to hide it from selected people.
