Read brake pads tight on disk from squeezing rear brake with

On receipt of my new bike, I squeezed the rear brake with the rear wheel removed. Brake pads locked and I couldn't open them again. I carefully squeezed them open with 2 screwdrivers, enough to get the rear wheel back on. But the pads now drag horribly on the disk. Is the best thing to do is to remove the rear wheel again and prize them open even more? or is there a better way. Brakes are Avid Elixir 5.
Any advice is well appreciated as I need to get on the bike!

Take the pads out and push the pistons back with a flat screwdriver.0

Try and get hold of some spacers for between the brake pads when the wheels are removed. That way this wont happen again.0

I usually cram some folded cardboard into the gap between the brake pads if I remove the wheels. Does the job perfectly.0
