Can you list any songs which are perhaps quite spooky or scary. Or, perhaps when you are walking on the street at night, you turn around and die of fright !

This song is up there for me in thats its a macabre reggae riff with those strange horror movie horns. Of course the song is more about the zeitgeist of the time, but it triggers something in me that hates it....

Can't say the only record I remotely recognise them for is particularly scary0 -
A little obvious and not that scary, especially now you associate it with long curly black hair and far fetched plotlines:
Danse Macabre
Plenty of aphex twin qualifies. (I'm sure afx237 V7 agrees...) Girlfriend hates it when I play any aphex twin. Some examples:
Hedphelym
Radiator
Then again, it's from the 'ambient works' - so maybe calling them songs is a little generous.0 -
Song for the deaf - Queens of the Stone Age - creepy, ace.0
-
Most of the Cocteau Twins early stuff, the Garlands album Blood Bitch and Wax and Wane spring to mind0
-
Nei varchi di luce by Ludivico Einaudi. creepy as hell, from the album sotto falso nome0

The War of the Worlds album scared the crap out of me as a kid. I had nightmares for years of 3 legged monsterous, metal robots stomping over from Manchester. Red weed would chase me up the road, I had to get away from my home to escape it etc. I still feel very uncomfortable around those huge one legged wind turbines.
Not exactly a 'song' but hearing even the first few lines of the first track makes my hackles stand.http://www.youtube.com/user/Eurobunneh - My Youtube channel.0 -
Theres a rolling stones recording of house in new orleans floating about the internet where at the end you can hear screams and shouts of "He's got a gun!" don't know exactly whats going on but if there was someone in the audience with a gun it would be scary......not the same sort of scary I think the OP was on about though!0

dabbling with backward lyrics the intro to this was pretty scarey at the time

A great song which also always reminds me of American werewolf in London, a classic film of its time.Tail end Charlie

Indeed.
But any Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Current 93, Nurse with Wound type stuff can be scary. I remember when Coil did the soundtrack for Hellraiser, Clive Barker decided they shouldn't use it as it was a bit too scary.

When I was in Splott Infants School, we were listening the narrated version of "Peter and the Wolf". I had to go for a wee-wee and on the way back the spooky Wolfs theme was playing on the Dansette record player. ( All those under 30, ask yer dad/grandads what that is...)
The sound echoing/reverbarating around the empty corridors put the spooks up his 7yr old!0 -
Listening to the umagumma version of "careful with that axe Eugene" with the lights off always used to scare me stupid !0
