Hi,
I was just looking at this

http://road.cc/content/news/23149-hope- ... nd-freehub

and wondering if any cog experts could spell out the benefits in simple terms?
I did read a link from here not long back that explained all about doubles, compacts and 12-28s ect.
Is this the game changer Hope claim (no left shifter, or front mech)? or just hype?
Thanks

It's what it says it is; cassette and freehub in one.

    It's not changing any games.

    Possible benefits:

    Lighter
    Cheaper (?)
Smaller last sprocket possible (which then leads them off into the fantasy land of having 10 widely spaced sprockets and a single front chainring. That might be OK for an MTB but bugger all use on a road bike)

    I like the colours though!

    This what I was thinking...

"Am I missing something, but isn't this a ....... freewheel?"

And it was exactly the first comment under the article

^ the main advantage over a freewheel is that you can remove individual cogs (I think) and replace the bearings. If one cog wears, or the bearings go on your freewheel the whole thing has to go in the bin
  • You can remove individual cogs on freewheels just the same as cassettes and you can replace the ball bearings.

  • The advantage of a freehub over a freewheelis the ability of a freehub to have bearings at the end of the axle. This makes for more reliable wheels. This is like a freewheel with outer bearings, but it will only fit Hope hubs.

When it wears out you have to replace both sprockets and freehub at the same time. The larger sprokets are all machined out of a singleblock of metal, so you cannot replace them individually or choose your own ratios.

One for the weight weenies/ all the gear - no idea!
