Broked cassette! Or hub? Not sure...

Hello people

Just after some advice. Over the last few days commuting my freewheel seems to be misbehaving. When I coast it will go along normally then suddenly the cassette starts turning along with the wheel (as if it was fixed), so the chain goes all slack on top. It will bump around for a few seconds then return to freewheeling.

Does that sound like the hub? Is it something I can fix? I'm happy taking off cassette etc but I've never completely built a wheel or taken a hub apart.

Bike is a Dolan Mythos, Ultegra hubs, Ultegra rear mech, 105 front mech, 105 chain.

Thanks for reading!

  • It's the freehub sticking. Part of the hub; not part of the cassette.

THey are not really serviceable, but most are replaceable.

Sounds like you have a sticky "pawl".

  • Are they not like MTB hubs where you take the cassette off(optional) pull the freehub body off.

Then clean out the hub recess replace springs and pawls as required then relube lightly?

Never taken apart a shimano hub but having to replace a freehub just for sticky pawls seems a pita ?

Hmm ok, thanks for the suggestions. Once I take the cassette off, how do you remove the freehub body?

  • Remove axle, insert 10mm hex key. LBS should fit it for you when you buy new freehub.
You could remove it and squirt it with WD40 or GT85 or any other evil solvent, then soak it in lube; but you'll never get grease in there and come winter/salty time you'll have to do it again and again.

Not an Ultegra, but you get the idea. GoodLuck :D

I thought some shimano type freehubs were servicable, but I could be wrong
