Which tyres should I get?

Sorry for the total newbie questions. I have a 2004 (I think) Hardrock Pro which I bought way back then but barely used until this summer when I have well and truly caught the bug.

It has Rockster 26x2.10 tyres on it which have become a bit perished over the years of not being used. It seems okay at the moment but I really want to keep cycling over the winter and think I should probably change the tyres.

I like the running speed of those tyres and haven't really had any issues with grip. I was riding a 2009 Carrera Fury the other week and found the 2.35 Continental Gravity tyres really slow (does that seem right)?

I don't even know if it is okay to go with wider tyres on the same rims and can't seem to find that sort of basic advice.

I mostly cycle towpaths, with some roads, trails and grassy routes. I'd quite like a tyre which is fairly robust because it takes me ages to fix a puncture.

Any suggestions?

i use continental mountain king's in the winter, but i used them for all of last year and only got one puncture. Not bad going really.

  • I have a set of Panaracer Cedric Gracia XC 2.1 and they roll really well and look to meet the brief on the terrain type mentioned.

Not had a puncture yet, but they may be too soft sided for your brief

    Mountain King 2.2 Black Chilli.

The best tyre out there for mixed XC riding.

I find the best all-round tyre to be the Maxis ignitor, they put that tread pattern on 23 different tyres so it must be pretty good.

get the 2.1 and you will be good for most terrain,
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?
  • thanks for the advice folks. i'll check those out.

Have to say I was a bit wary of trying MKs after all the mixed comments about them but after a couple of months use I quite like 'em.

The 2.2 on the back is kinda skinny and smears a little too easily on wet rocks and roots but the 2.4 on the front hangs on for grim death and inspires loads of confidence. No punctures to date but that's not unusual for me around Cannock.

For the terrain you've mentioned, I'd get some maxxis crossmark 2.1s - they are really fast and have decent grip on most things apart from wet rock and roots.
