just to pass on an official police NW notice for those in Bristol. I know it goes on all the time, it seems there's an increase currently.

This message is being sent across Bristol by NHW Administrator for South Bristol on Wednesday 18th August 2010 at 2.20pm.

Please be advised that Bristol District as a whole has identified a current trend of Theft of Pedal Cycles. This is also impacting right across the city, with a variety of cycles, including some specialist models of very high value, being stolen from insecure garages and sheds, In addition cycles are being taken from the public domain whilst locked up outside shops and restaurants.

Please remind neighbours, friends and relatives who own cycles to do everything possible to secure them when left unattended in any situation.

Always lock your bike - especially at home!
Lock to a fixed immovable object like a permanent bike rack.
Lock in a well-lit area with a lot of foot traffic.
Use two locks such as a U-lock and a locking cable.
Remember to take photographs of your cycle and record the serial numbers.

In addition, please note and promote the immobilise website: www.immobilise.com <http://www.immobilise.com>
which provides an electronic bike marking and tracing system. Security labels can also be obtained from the company advising that the cycle is registered, which is an additional deterrent for any would be thieves.

The bikes that are nicked are being stripped for parts instantly - it is a professional operation.

I found my parts on ebay - said sellar has been cautioned for handling stolen goods and allot of parts were returned to their rightful owners. But none of the frames were found....

Parts are harder to trace than the frame, no serial numbers etc. Nick a bike, strip it and dump the frame somewhere and Ebay or Gumtree the bits.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
