Bike build

I have a work colleague looking to buy a mtb/hybrid for trails/town riding etc. He is looking at around the £600 area and I have suggested a few machines that might fit the bill. However on looking around I started to wonder whether its possible to build one for him (a project I would love to do) seeing that merlin do some good deals on wheel and groupset packages. At this kind of price point is it possible to build something which would be comparable if not better than what you can buy in the shops? The one sticking point so far seems to be in finding a suitable frame and fork combination as my colleague is 6 foot 6 and has an inside leg measurement of 36 inches. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

You'll really struggle to get to the value of off the shelf bikes, the bits really add up! There really aren't many hybrid frames available, as most folk buying a bike of that ilk just want off the shelf.
