I have some Mavic SSC wheels - tubular. Is it possible to convert them to clinchers by buying Mavic clincher rims and rebuilding? Any idea of cost? Thanks.

  • Do you have pics or any more detail? Depends on the spokes and spoke count. It may be possible but it's unlikely to be cost-effective unless you're doing all the work yourself.

Not possible - unless you are just talking about re-using the hubs?

But the cost of taking apart a perfectly good pair of tubular wheels are rebuilding them with clincher rims wold be more than selling them as they are and buying a clincher set.

Clincher rims and tubular rims have significantly different profiles on them - it's all how the tyre attaches to the rim.
  • Thanks Pokerface - no I was wondering about using the spokes too. Cost aside I guess then the spokes would be too long for an equivalent clincher rim ?

Not necessarily - but the whole exercise would still be overly costly and unnecessary. Mavic hubs aren't that great that you would want to build a whole new set of wheels around them.

Sell them as is and buy what you want. Or better yet - use them as tubs!
  • Yep - I like them a lot as tubs. They're great. Never had a puncture in 500 miles. But I think I shouldnt be using them for EVERY ride I do on my best road bike! Its an extravagance! But if I do puncture I have a spare tub (Vittoria Rally £9.99 Decathlon and Pit Stop) so its not that much of an extravagance really. But I think I have now developed a potentially expensive habit and cant go back to my R500's!!

I know lots of people that ride every day on tubs. Nothing wrong with it. And you can have them fixed depending on the size of the hole if you do get a flat.
  • I am now feeling more comfortable about my habit. :)
