Some woman was on the radio this morning complaining that it took her over 50 minutes to drive the mile to work today, because she couldn't take the tube.

A MILE?
you could bloody walk it in 10-15 minutes.
Why would you even contemplate driving if you only work a MILE from your house/flat?

They're all a bunch of sheepsknobs.

    See here.

    And here.

I saw someone on the commuting bit of the forum saying how they had to walk somewhere with a few friends (again, only a mile or so) and they knew the way, but their friends didn't have a clue, because they always get the tube and can't find their way around in the open air!

  • walk?! In those strappy wedge shoes? They cost a fortune and would break her svelte pencil thin ankles, plus she has her extra large skinny latte with cinammon to carry, the latest Maeve Binchy, her laptop, ipad, blackberry, four make up bags, a brace of hairbrushes, a spare pair of shoes, spare nickers in case she goes out that evening and ends up somewhere she shouldnt and her wallet loaded with 27 credit cards for essential purchases in Selfridges at lunchtime.

Perhaps she had a lot of stuff to carry?

If you live on one side of the river and work the other, there are plenty of places where walking wouldn't be feasible but you could drive only a mile to work. Ie the blackwall tunnel.

(side note:did you see that tracked motor board thing on the gadget show last night, awesome)

if your too lazy or scared to cycle, do your cbt and buy a 125cc, surely the quickest form of transport and no congestion charge.

I have seen people wait for bus 40 minutes and travel only 1-2 bus stops to get out. Less than 1 mile of travelling. Woot?
    What could have been (Video)

I'll choose not put too much stake into someone's opinion who is admittingly terrible though
  • Having used the tube for a couple of days there I have to say it's handiness is awesome. Coupled to that how miserable the cyclists I have seen there looked I can understand it.

Saying that alot of these whining commuters need to man up and get on with it.

Guess simultaneous strike of London Underground and London Buses would equal a nuclear war on London. Only cyclists would survive, on a burlier bikes I suppose.

During the "Great Train Strike of '95" I rode from Marks Tey to the City, 55 miles, and on a few occasions from the City to Chelmsford, 35 miles on the same day too.

Then did 8 hrs as a Police Self Defence/Fitness instructor.
GOD, I was fit in thoes days!!!

Roads were a bit busy but not too bad, and I was going faster than traffic once I reached East London.

    But a MILE?
You can WALK a bloody mile. I've often walked more than that to get some milk in the morning.

  • most of them do need to MTFU. When the tube was on strike/broken/an oven I used to regularly walk from Marble Arch or Waterloo to LLS, but given I used to walk between meetings and buildings I did know where I was going.

Different case if you're at the end of the district or central line etc, then you are stuffed and have to endure the bus mentals. Anybody remember the Peckham Terminator?

No, it should be the otherway round, to be fair that was the most extreme one i could think of off the top of my head.

Never used the river taxi myself however is it not affected by the strike too since its workers are part of tssa?

not many people live at Canada Square either really.....

no idea if the clipper is affected by the strike. are the buses? their drivers should be in the same bunch no?

Not knowing your way around londonis no excuse...

its easy...maps are available on mobile phones FFS and most people now have phones with the capability. If they don't...paper based maps are available.

I was in london at the end of june.

we walked from Lancaster Gate to Covent Garden, back to Mayfair, then back to Hyde Park....all in one morning! however apparently finding your way around would be too difficult for people who actually LIVE there!

I used to go to gaming events in London, at Finchley. I'd fly or get the train down then get the underground out to Norf Lahndan, but mates of mine who lived in the south of London refused to go because IT WAS TOO FAR AWAY  Then saw about 10 million Muse fans fighting to get into the station nearest to Olympia while we walked up the road to the station before.

Dunno what all the fuss is about.

Cycled in and out yesterday. This morning took train to Victoria, had a nice walk past Buckingham Palace, through Green Park and Mayfair to the office. Only took 15 mins longer than if I'd taken the tube. Sometimes do that even if there's no strike.

As for all the yokels slagging off London - you're just jealous 'cos you live in the ar$e end of nowhere :P

Now, I'll start this post by stating that I wholeheartedly advocate whatever you do, join a union.

But, I can't say too much about the topic as its quite close to home regarding employment, but what I will say, as a former RMT member, that Bob Crow is a complete tool, and the circus that seems to surround him whenever something important needs standing up for, detracts from the true message. I have had the displeasure of meeting him on a few occasions and for me he is an example of a unionist that simply wants to make a name for himself. Yes there are important issues involved, but Bob Crow is a wanton self publicist, who looks out for number one. The RMT in my opinion would be better served with someone less brash and egotistical at the helm.
