Hardknott on a Double

I was planning on heading up to the lakes this week until I saw the forecast, so will delay for a bit.

Just wondering if anyone had experience of Hardknott when loaded up. I'm going to be travelling very very light (possibly 3 or 4 kg) but I only have a double chainring.

Thinking should I avoid the pass or go for it.

Just earlier in the summer I manage to ruin a pair of pedals coming out of Edale fully loaded up.

How does it compare to Winnats?

Mmm, don't know about Hardknott but I went up Wrynose with a double (39X28) this spring, and I carry more than 3 or 4 kg with me all the time  .
It was definitely a painful experience - on the final steep bit I was almost at a standstill between every push on the pedals - but I made it.

If you couldn't get up Mam Nick (I'm assuming that's the climb you mean out of Edale and not Winnats itself) then there's no way you'll make it up Hardknott. The same goes if it was Winnats - Hardknott is harder.
    More problems but still living....
  • I've done it fully loaded and it was pretty tough.

I made it up there no problem, just my cadence was ultra slow and I thought I was going to snap my pedals off I was pushing down so hard.

That picture just posted makes me want to get out there and do it even more!

In that case you might just be okay :o

Are you expecting to find anything as steep as Hardknott in the Alps
  • Hardknot is such a great place to be it's well worth not being too proud to push. Fully loaded with camping gear using an 8 speed Alfine hub found me doing just that. Also on Wrynose but not on Kirkstone. Not quite ready for the Fred.

You should not hesitate for a second. Go fot it!
