Hi folks just a quick question...
...Is it possible to repair chipped off lacquer on a carbon frame? I have a couple of nasty nicks under which water keeps penetrating and spreading the chip marks. Anyone else had this problem or know if its possible to fix?
Many thanks

I've had carbon forks re-lacquered, although did not have the water ingress problem so don't know if that presents any further concern0

Thanks for the reply, where did you have it done?0

I believe you can buy carbon lacquer at Hafords not sure how good it is. Maybe someone on here has used it.0

google "two pack lacquer" its far far stronger and doesnt go yellow like one pack a.k.a halfords spray cans ! they are expensive tho at around £12 for a 250ml can...worth it for your bike tho !0

Proper 2 pack laquer will kill you! Good single pack laquer shouldn't yellow, the car industry used it for years before 2 pack came along without problems and restorers still use it.
I had mine re-laquered by C&G Liverpool through Steve Goff when i was having my frame renovated0 -

If your referring to the Syinide myth...its a well a myth ! Yes its potent stuff but its far far stronger then single pack. Single pack also wears off easy and will literally fall off with clearing products. Even the best will yellow with time. Two pack is the way to go !0 -
Just a thought, but if you are getting water ingress you might have some delamination of the carbon and your nasty chips may be something more serious. I would get it checked out by an expert.0

Not getting into an argument about something which may or may not be poisonious (would be interested to know where you have heard this myth from), just look at the lenghts the pro's go towards keeping this stuff out of their lungs, definatley not for home use without seriously proper equipment. Plus paint is vapourised into aerosol form which will easily enter the lungs and in the case of 2-pack will then quite happily harden and clear coat the insides of your nice alveoli presenting you with all manner of breathing problems, certainly not conductive to better climbing!
I agree that carbon refinish is best left to the professionals0 -
Thanks everyone for the replies. I think on balance I would prefer to leave to a professional. Any shouts on any professionals able to do this kind of work or should I be contacting Condor the makers of the frame??
I'm in South East if that helps...0 -
2 pack is superior paint if you have a gas mask.0
