i'm staying with the family near hope/castleton towards the end of september, will only probbaly get a full morning or 1 day maximum to myself so dont want to bring my own bike over.

Any reccomednations for bike hire and a good loop begining and ending close by?

i found a link to a map with some
strenuous off road routes
around ladybower

http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/cycle-ro ... valley.pdf

are these any good? Is there a hire place nearby?

dont want anything too mental but i'm used to north wales so climbing and technical stuff is fine. I've got a 1:25k map for the area and am a good navigator but dont have any of these new fangled electronic toys to download routes

cheers

  • Fairholmes Visitors centre at Ladybower hires bikes out, but am not sure how good they are as I live locally and always take my own. I think they may be more aimed at families and casual riders, but there are nice rides around Ladybower if you want to take the family with you.

The routes on the map are the claasics around ladybower.

yeah i had a look at fairholmes, dont think they will be suitable for the type of riding i had in mind.

18bikes in hope do demo bikes but £40 is a bit steep.

The bikes at Fairholmes are cheap jobbies designed for riding around the reservoirs only. The only real option is a demo bike.I seem to remember JEJames in Sheffield do them at around £45 per weekend IIRC,but that could be a day rate.
  • You should check out Hike Bike and Ride/Trail Monkeys, at Bradwell, near Hope:

    http://www.hikebikeandride.com/hire_bikes.aspx

    £15/25 half/full day hire

Earlier this summer they were hiring out well-specced Ghost hardtails, I'm not sure if they have any full-sus stuff going yet: I think they were planning to.

I really like the riding around Ladybower, good climbing and descending. Check out these two routes:

  • Been to the place at Bradwell, seemed ok quality wise to me.

If you like something a bit technical but really good then try Cut Gate from Fairholmes. Its a nice cross between mad and exhilerating. Can do it in a loop from the car park and back. Its a real classic.
