It was all at Eurobike. I liked the Planet 8 belt drive!
You realise what an enormous range they have when you see it all in one room.

Really boring colours on the road bikes. The izalco pro 1.0 and the cayo 4.0 are the only ones with a splash of colour. I just don't get this black & white trend (focus, canyon, kuota etc). Has Henry Ford been cloned and employed as a designer for half of the major bike companies?

    Boring, boring, boring.
  • I commented some time ago to a bike dealer about the boring colours and he thought it was because the manufacturers wanted to play it safe with dull sensible colours, rather than risk having a lot of 'garishly' painted bikes unsold.

Then again, someone else thought that what the bike was like to ride was more important than how it looked - but surely if it offends your eyes or your own sense of style you're not going to want it anyway.

Doesn't work for me, I'd never buy a black & white bike (or all black, or all white), so that's several manufacturers that won't get my custom.

Of course ride is what really matters, but if I'm paying a 4 figure sum for a bike frame I'm going to see every day for the next 2 or 3 years, I'm not going to compromise and buy something I don't like the look of. I'd rather have any number of supposedly garish colour schemes than just plain B&W.

Has anyone ever ridden anything with a belt drive?
  • do they have any bikes with di2 like last year?
  • I have just ordered a 2011 Cayo 2.0- I think the value for money is terrific. I have to say though I am split over the colouring- I nearly went for a Pinarello FP2 (105) in naked carbon but then realised it was more that the styling was so amazing on the Pinarello that I wanted to make love to the bike rather than ride it. The Cayo 2.0 has Ultegra and FSA running gear, and amazing brakes so it represents better value (and hopefully won't have the Pinarello's ridiculous reach). The thing is, I quite like the dark styling as well. I currently have a white Specialized bike and am constantly cleaning it with baby wipes, and after a long ride it looks a bit second rate- I can't imagine the Cayo's dark colours being affected like this. Maybe it's because I'm English and we're a bit weird like that.
  • The only thing I've ever ridden with belt drive was a Kawasaki motorbike.

Easy to maintain, no messy oil to contend with. The only downside was when it expensively snapped with no obvious wear showing at 80mph on the M2. Still I guess a bicycle will have less speed and strain on it!

I have a 2008 focus cayo all black. If I had the chance again I would go fo the Pinarello over a focus every time, but thats just me.Focus is a good bike but a Pinarello is just better.
  • OK, that's interesting- would a better groupset change your decision then? The Cayo has Ultegra and the FP2 I am looking at only has 105. I heard today that my Cayo order has been delayed by at least another 6 weeks...
