Anyone know what it is with/without shock? I have a crazy idea in my head and want to know if it'll be worth pursuing.

Pretty damn heavy, cause the top of the range XXX version is around 15kg.

    What kind of crazy idea?

Make it into a hardtail
  • Chuffin heavy lol. Think my banshee x was about 35lbs, a killer on the climbs.
  • I was thinking of getting one on the cheap and mashing something reasonable together weighing about 13kg. Obviously I'd remove the stickers and I thought it'd be rather cool/smug to be able to tell people I was riding a Carrera better than them on their ridiculous bikes.

It would be possible, with a Sram XX groupset, Stan's Olympic rim's on Tune hubs and some DT Swiss carbon shocks, but that kind of defeats the point.

  • It's a shame, I'll have to find some other more suitable frame. Anyone know any 'rubbish' bike brands?

carrera's aren't rubbish , unlike your "crazy idea".
    :?
  • Well done on misunderstanding what I wrote. I said 'rubbish' not rubbish, implying that I want a bike brand that's considered below the standards of some riders that I can build up and ride harder and better than aforementioned poseurs ride their 'better' bikes.

    Why ?
What have you got to prove to complete strangers whom just happen to have pricey bikes ?

I outpace people on all sorts of bikes, and have been outpaced by a guy on an 80mm travel Brand X hardtail, if I could afford a 4k superbike I would buy it because it's a good bike, and would still be outpaced by someone, and outpace people on it.

Wanting to outpace people on fancier bikes is fine, but building up a mediocre frame just to say "LOLZ, I owned u on ma crappy Carrera" is ridiculous.

  • I have nothing to prove and I have no desire to go out of my way to teabag anyone with more money or less skill/luck than me. I just wanted a project for fun that would result in a fairly decent all-round fs bike.

nothing wrong with that , just do it for your own enjoyment.
it would be more fun doing it the other way round , buy a £4k ibis mojo superbike and put shockwave BSO stickers and other naff accessories on it , then rip round the trails smokin all the poseurs. :D

It sounds like a cr@p idea, why spend all that money on top of the line gear and then have that frame? if you really want to upset people on high end machines either buy a decent bike to start off with and take the stickers off or get a lot fitter and beat them anyway...
  • At no point did I say I was going to get top of the line gear. The thread was about how heavy the frame is so I could judge whether I'd end up with a hefty clunker with (second-hand) SLX gear hanging of it. I have an answer (of sorts) and have decided that the bike will be too heavy to be worth it.

Not even I would try to make a great bike out of a mediocre frame. If I wanted top level stuff I'd get a top level frame to go with it. As it is, I don't have the money for that so I'll continue to ride my £200 bike until I think of some more reasonable project to embark on.

PS. yeehaa - I don't know if your were being deadly serious but I don't care. In a totally non-gay way I kind of like you on here.

Two people with half a brain really only totals one normal person.

Riding a heavier bike should make you fitter so when you do finally get an expensive one you'll widdle all over the guys on thier mega expensive bikes ;-)

Does the same apply to being fat?

Quite possibly, the fatter you are the better grip you as the bike's pushed into the ground more...

No no, being heavy making you fitter I mean.

i thought you were on a wind up 8) I would imagine you have to work harder to move the bike about but heavy people generally have good legs as they have more weight to support so could potentially produce a good amount of power when seated on a bike maybe?

Well, it's not a wind up, just a tongue in cheek comment.

They are not bad frames, but looking at 8lbs at least without shock.
