Cheap wheels

I'm doing up an old bike - nothing special, and I'm working to a tight budget. Frame's getting powder coated next week and I'm trying to find some wheels.

I'm after a front and rear singlespeed set to put some nice skinny tyres on and was wondering if anyone had any hints on where to find them cheaply? To be honest I'm not too worried about their provenance or condition as long as they're useable; I can always get them aligned. There don't seem to be any bargains left on ebay these days unless you buy the whole thing...

Any ideas? Thanks for any help...

I have done up a couple of 1980's frames and have need extra long drop brakes as well for the 700c wheels. If you are on a really tight budget the tip is a good place to look. Mine regularly has old 80's bike there.

No point, the tip employees will take everything half decent sell on ebay, and leave the bent and buckled ones.
    Say... That's a nice bike..

I must have been lucky with mine, have got 2 frames from there, shame I took the wheels back down as had no need for them.

  • Thanks for the tips guys. Have tried my local tip (Oxford) but they said they don't allow people to take things. Later found out that they have a deal with a local cycle shop so that they get anything useable and sell it on!

Maybe varies from tip to tip, will try another one, cheers guys.

I'm not too far from you Luke, my two tips are at Ardley and just outside Banbury, I will keep an eye out, what sort of thing are you after (size/condition etc). I also know a guy up north that always has a collection of old bike stuff, I will ask him if you like.

  • Thanks - anything useable would be great, don't mind filing out a bit of rust or getting them re-aligned. Reckon it's worth me popping over to Ardley or Banbury?

There was nothing at Ardley yestarday and Banbury (Farthinghoe) had an old ladies drop barred racer, the frame was ok but not sure about the wheels. Apparently the wife does not need a singlespeed project bike... Poss not worth a special trip over. I will ask my man in Yorkshire and drop you a pm if can come up with anything.
