I have an orange 5 at the monent but am wanting to chnage the fork. It has a standard strieght steerer Fox Float in there now but have been offered some better spec forks , but theses have a tapered steerer. Is there a headset bearing combination which i would be able to buy to fit the taperd steerer into the streight head tube.
Thanks

Don't think you can...you can use a standard steerer in a tapered steerer tube with adaptors but don't think you can do it the other way around....as a tapered fork matches the flare of the tapered head tube..

I was just reading this on the Ragley site: http://www.shedfire.com/2010/09/01/ragl ... headtubes/

mentions a headset to fit tapered steerer forks into 1.125" headtubes in the 4th paragraph.

I don't know if your Orange 5 has a zerostack (not 100% on what that means) but I do remember seeing the current orange 5 with tapered head tube has a flush fitting headset on the bottom at least so yours may be the same but for non-taper.

    hope that helps.
  • Sounds a bit awkward !

The cone shaped steerer on the 1:5 forks that sits on the crown of the fork will undoubtedly foul in the 1"1/8th steerer, no doubt it can be adapted and probably will be but its gonna leave all the bearing race stepped out from the bottom of the steerer a good way and kind of detracts from having the added strength in the steerer of the tapered shape,

    If that makes sense ?

you can fit a tapered into a 1.5" straight, but not a 1.1/8.

I assume the orage comes with the 11/8 so you can't use them.

However there are a lot of people looking for tapered forks, so you could do a trade easily.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?

As I said, tapered fork into 1 1/8th headtube. You would just end up having an increase in stack height which may or may not be a problem.
