I am trying to crack this weight losing quest on my bike. but no matter how carefully I pick my gears (with a tight budget of course), the weight of my bike seems to not getting down to 12kg.

My quest: (with trying to spend the least I can) get the bike down to 12kg in weight.

my gear list;
Charge Duster steel frame ( I know... hefty steel could be the wrong start)
SLX double chainset.
MG1 padels
REBA 07/08 fork
Elixir CR carbon brakes, with 160 rotors f&b
USE atom carbon rasier bar,
Truvative team stem 80mm, 5* raise
Thomson elite 330 seat post,
Charge Spoon cromo saddle
Sram SX5 shifters & rear mech 8 speed (which came with the bike)
Mavic Crosstrail wheel set 09

um... thats pretty much it. any idea what is worth changing without spending a fortune. I really dont have that kinda money to afford some Sram XX chainset

cheers lads

  • What is your budget? What tubes and tyres do you run? How much weight would you like to lose off your bike?
  • sorry that i forgot to mention, I have not got a very accurate scale, I am just using the body scale i have in my bathroom to weight my bike.
It is current close to 13kg (somewhere between 12.5-13) i would guess its now 12.7 kg.
my budget... maybe another £200? well, it is not fixed budget, but it would be good to know what to look for.
the tyres I am running is panaracer fireXC UST.
  • £200 to lose c2lbs? You aren't asking much are you? lol

Totally cheating but: Changing the tyres to regular Conti MK Supersonic's and running them tubeless will save you about a pound straight away, 2 x tyres plus sealant is roughly £100

Charge Spoon saddle is heavy at 258g

You could save c100g by spending £100 there
You would only save c40g for the same money on your stem
    Pedals: save 100g for £100

Other things you could do is shortening cables, using electrical tape instead of rim tape. Change your tubes for lighter ones. remove the BB plastic shell. All willl help reduce weight. Durability might be a different matter
  • thanks pal,
tyres and saddle. got it. what kinda saddel weigth sub200g? would i need to use some road saddle? (whats the different any between road & mtb saddle)

you mention the stem... can save another 40g? really? what kinda stem would weight 90g?

    thanks again.
  • Sub 200g is easy. The Selle Italia range is popular amongst racers. The Gel flow is c170g for about £80. Then there is the Saevid which is a similar profile at 84g for under £100

Saddles are highly personal though. You have to know what you like.

The Syntace F99/109 is around the 100g mark.
