replacing front mech

Hi all.

I've just replaced the cassette and chain on my GT, but foolishly forgot to check the chainset. Which was well and truely foobared.

I've ordered one, and got it wrong, (24-34-48t instead of 22-32-44t)
The front Dérailleur is attached via a plate screwed onto the bottom bracket and too low as a result. (it'a all going wrong)

I was wondering about a cheap and cheerful replacement to last a few weeks so i can save up for a better mech.
I have seen one on chainreaction for three pounds, but says it's for a 6 or 7 speed setup, but compatible with 48t chainsets,
(looking at my previous one it also said 7 speed compatibility too)
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=42320
(if the mods want it removed feel free to do so, sorry if i have spammed)

would this work with an 8speed setup as a temporary measure as i'm on a charity bike ride on the 11th september and it's becoming a bit of a brown pants moment, so many things have failed this week I can't afford replace anything else.

Any advice would be gratefully appriciated

Paul

It will work fine, but they only have in 34.9mm, so make sure it will fit your seatube. Needs to be 11cm around where the mech will fit. They also have some Tourneys at similar price in different sizes.

I've got a couple of random old mechs in my Box'o'Bits (TM)

If you let me know the size and pull (bottom or top) if I have one that will work will send it to you for karma.

    Good luck with the ride.

  • I've just pulled the mech off now, and getting all the info

the specs show Top Swing Front Derailleur and the cable comes from the top.

This'll show i'm a newbie in this respect. (the rest i'm good at dealing with)

the seat tube is 11.2cm (could be the cheap tape i was using.)

    the chainset i ordered is http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=41893
if that shows the scope of what i have here.

I hope it makes sense squire.

Thank you for your help so far.

That mech should be fine. 2mm won't make any difference and it is a top swing top or bottom pull. I'll take a look anyway in the morning and pm you.

  • Thats fine, thank you young fella!

The ride is called Balls Of Steel.

I's a ride i've organised and (until now) solo run since 2006 beforehand it was for local charities in my area, but this year we were approached by BEdfordshire and Surrey sands when they heard of the ride. they asked could we split the funds 3 ways,

so this year it's a whole new kettle of fish. including the route, (i'll find the link in a short while)
but here is a long video from the gent who's event coincided with the original (it's long)
