Sometimes, just sometimes, I really hate fettling...

So, this afternoon, I thought I'd sort out the problem with the XTC's drivetrain. Symptoms were very similar to a b0rked bottom bracket - lumpy when peddling. Now the bottom bracket is brand spanking new, so it had to be something else.
First job - changed the pedals to the XTR one's off the NRS. Went for a test ride, same problem.
Second job - changed the cassette and chain. Went for a test ride, same problem.
Third job - changed the whole rear wheel, for the one off the NRS. Went for a test ride, same problem.
Forth job - Changed the chainrings. Went for a test ride, same problem.
However, upon taking the 2nd set of chainrings back off the crankarm to refit the original ones, I noticed some slight play. Thinking I'd not tighten up the bolts, I re-tightened them, but they were still tight?? Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the spider moves where it's connected to the crankarm (old skool Shimano Octalink jobby).
Can't think of a way to fix this, so looks like I'll be needing some new cranks.
Fortunately I have a brithday in a couple of weeks time...

so due to fettling, you have now found a fantastic excuse for some shiny new parts for your bike.
And you hate fettling because.......? :?0 -

This is the XTC, which I'd decided to build up out of 'spare' parts and not spend any money on it. When I first built it up to a rideable state, it only cost me £6 for a seatpost shim. I was happy with that. However, it is now starting to cost me money...
Also, it took me a whole afternoon of taking both Giants apart to find a problem that I should have noticed/diagnosed much sooner.
I'm also fu**ed off with CRC's new layout/pricing. Trying to find something that's actually in stock or in the size/type you want is pretty much a lottery...
I think it's about time I had some pie...0 -
Mmm some of them have a removable spider.
the XTR BB tool will tighten it up."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

It's a FC-M530 set? Doesn't appear to be anything I can tighten.Cat With No Tail wrote:El Capitano wrote:I think it's about time I had some pie...

Erm much as I'd like to use that, the first thing my Mom would say is "why do you need so many gears?" She used to race on the track.
Now, if I was to send this to Mrs C...0 -
