It appears that one of Sky's soigneurs - Txema Gonzalez - who had this illness fell into a coma and died in hospital today.

  • How sad. Are there any other sources than biciclissimo?

The source of the virus is not clear, but Team Sky officials have ruled out food poisoning.

    Very worrying.

Presumably all the riders are having regular health checks? Perhaps they should withdraw as a precaution. Sympathies to the family and all involved with the soigneur :(

Vey sad indeed but not related to the virus the team has apparently

From Sky website, the soigneur was 43 years old and although he died of toxic shock, it is apparently not related to the intestinal virus from which the riders have been suffering from.

Shocking news- and so quick as well.

My condolences to his family. Sky must be feeling battered.

Sky withdraw from the Vuelta: http://www.teamsky.com/article/0,27290,19634_6356679,00.html

    Brailsford:
"Txema's death is devastating to everyone in Team Sky. We've lost a good friend, a much respected and valued colleague.

"We have considered all the elements very carefully and this is the only decision we could take. It's the right one; to show respect to Txema and to look after our team.

"We discussed it with Txema's family and they fully support our decision. They have asked us to the funeral next week and we will of course be there to support them and to pay our respects.

"Others - staff and riders - have been ill during this Tour and Juan Antonio Flecha pulled out on Friday. The medical conditions are different but we need to take care of our team.

"The organisers of the Vuelta and the UCI have both been informed of our decision and we are deeply grateful for their cooperation and understanding.

"We wish all the other teams in the race well and will now take time to deal with this tragic news.

"Our thoughts are with Txema's family."

    A real shame all around.

Not sure how I feel about the withdrawal - as a rider I might now be extra motivated to go for a stage win to dedicate to him - but completely understand why the team would want to and should pull out of the race.

+1, obviously as a sign of respect but also with riders continuing to struggle at the back of the peloton day in, day out the likes of Kennaugh are putting their longer term health at risk continuing for the sake of it.
  • Very sad news indeed and a totally understandable move from Sky, particularly considering the problems they've been having and the fact that the riders may want to attend the funeral.

Cyclingnews seem to have changed the URL for Millar's tribute:

Although I admit I'd never heard of Txema before his death, everything I've read since seems to point to him being one of our sport's humble and unsung heroes. RIP.

  • So sad, 43 is nothing, may he rest in peace.

Exactly my age. Makes me realise how lucky I am and how much good I should try to put into every day.

I had that feeling with Fignons death but to loose someone at 43 is very distressing.
I mean that a few days ago they all turned up full of hope and promise with ambitions for the Vuelta and he gets struck down like that. very sad. RIP.

a totally understandable move from Sky

Is it? Seems 'cos its only the Veulta, you think they'd have done this if it was the TDF?

Well let's hope it never happens again to test your theory.

So sad to go at an early age. RIP.
