Not actually used them myself, but I did some research before deciding not to buy it. Mostly it seems that it's only a little brighter than the old, single-lamp model (and absolutely not 1400 lumens) but in a more floody beam, so it feels less powerful. The only good points it seemed were improved sealing on the battery and the remote switch. If you can live without those then the advice on other forums was not to bother spending the extra.[/i]
  • I have one of the DX '900 Lumen' torches and it's far too bright as it is. A genuine 1400 lumen torch would be brighter than most car full beams and would probably get you stopped by the plod if they saw it in action. Go ahead, get one!
  • Hi - I have the 900/400 lumens set. Have had it for about 6 months now, best light I've ever had. When I commute in the dark - I use the A38 going south from Glos. No road lighting at all. If it's a 'normal' night I use the 400L setting, and only use the main beam if it's a shitty night - no moon/rain/mist etc.
I got mine from ebay shops, I think its called geoman.... got a great deal there, go and get one...
  • I seem to be going round in circles over a front light! Get drawn 1 way and then another.

    Anyway has anyone used this;

  • Wizz..... the 'light' part of this P7 is the same as the magicshine - yours appears to be in a torch format. The lamp is not a bulb but an emitter - this makes it more sturdy and there is no filament to break when going over bumpy roads/off road. IMHO this is a great front light for the money - I now wouldn't use any other light.... bargain...

My problem with this torch is that it is a very bright torch with no adaption for its usage on the road. So to be considerate to other roads users (cyclists as well) it has to be pointed too far down. The one I had wasn't a flood or a spot, just an in-between.

It's a shame that someone doesn't make a lens to go over the end to give it a nice flat cutoff then it would be much more useful.

Also regarding the above ebay advert : Look at Dealextreme for brand new stuff that seems as cheap.
  • So even on medium power setting you would think it would be to bright for road use?

  • UPDATE

Got the lights & battery well wet the other day. Total time in the pouring rain not just a shower was approx 1 hour. Not the first time they have been damp/wet in a ride home though. Each time I take them out of the nylon holder so they can dry but this time I forgot, but I don't think this is the reason for the failure. More to do with the insulation holding moisture.

Hoping they will work but just in case I'm looking for a circuit board for the batteries.

No water in light unit but the damp has got into the battery pack and sat there as the insulation used is still damp after 5 days.

Batteries check out OK after desoldering from the circuit board. Corrosion can be seen on the positive tab but I can repair this. The small red wire you can see is the balance wire that is used to balance charge the batteries during charge.

I did and the plod didn't stop me tonight :D

I'm running the 900 & 1400 together at the moment.

All I can say is brilliant.

Can't decide whether to get another 900 or 1400 :?

After more research i am begging for a magic shine for x mas.

Be aware that you might need to get a new battery pack sooner than you think and maybe budget for this.

Personally i would go for the 900 lumen and have a back up light , the 1400 lumen looks nice but is over what i can spend.

  • It may sound daft but isn't a light like this a bind when you park up and have to take it with you or have it stolen.

I have two LED Lenser P7's, VERY bright, and you can focus the beam, and you can see at least 300'.

Then you clip in and out of this

I already have 2 very similar supposedly 200 lumen AAA lights with focusable beam and i have found with AAA batteries they do not have enough power to last long and do not give enough light for my needs .

I have considered a torch of the output i need but they are a similar price to the MS,
for the unclipping etc but the only place my bike will be is either in the garage or in the locked biked sheds at work , and i would still take my actual light off and i have seen battery packs that i can mount in a bottle carrier.
Tbh after i have taken the total of 5 lights + panniers and then attached 2 locks which is my current routine i think the removal of 1 light instead of 3 front ones is not going to slow me down that much.

At the end of the day go with what suits you.

Just an update, i had this arrive 2 days ago and is rated at 230 lumens and is a lot brighter than AAA rated lights of the same max output....

this will be my back up light as it is very small , last up to 2 hours and is light enough to be a helmet mounted light.

Having decided that I was going to get something with a bit more puch, I'm now finiding that the more I read, the more confused I'm getting. P7, XPG - 900, 320, 250 lumens? AA, 18650? 2, 3 or 5 modes?

Looking for something for an urban commute with a couple of properly dark stretches but don't think I need a trillion lumens. It's a half hour commute so 90 mins + capacity would be good (so two sets of batteries will last a week). Not fussed if I have to go for 18650s.

Will happily wait for DX to deliver.

    Any suggestions. Ta.

    any good?
i have been looking at some of the AAA lights claiming 900 lumens and they might have at their maximum focus setting which is a small spot which is going to be small to cycle i think?

Thse are of course just my thoughts.

this is the spot setting on a AAA light

Guys, the P7 / XPG etc options are all covered in detail on the MTB forum, as many MTB riders use these lights off road. See http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtop ... t=12660193

Torches using 18650s will have more power than those using AA or AAAs. The quoted lumen ratings are usually much too high as they are theoratical values using unprotected cells - in reality your 900 lumen P7 will be nearer 500 lumens, but it will run for well over an hour on full beam... I was out for nearly 2hrs on Thursday night and did not have to change cells, though my P7 was dimming.

My only observation, for road use, is that a 2/3 mode P7 (with HI/LO and also stribe) is not a great on-road light as LO is not bright enough to see by, while HI is a bit too bright unless you angle it down... my guess is that a HI/MED/LO would be more flexible for commuting. I also have a 220 lumen 18650 driven C1 on my lid, and I use that on MID on road.

thinking of upgrading to these lights from the MJ-808 900 Lumens I have

I have had a set from the off, now 9 months old, i think, they are an improvement over the 900, TBH it would be better with just 3 of the XPE,s. i tend to run it on these two for most of the ride, when you switch to full power there is a noticeable drop in light from the two small lights as the P7 comes on which is a shame as the light pattern from the side lights is a really nice wide blanket of light!
