Hello,

I currently commute about 12 miles each way from North London to London Bridge, a change in situation may mean commuting from North London (n21) to Putney, which according to GMAP is about 20 miles. Is that a realistic commute in London with all the traffic lights and traffic or am i just been too optimistic?

Does anyone know of a potential route that I could take too?

Thanks!

  • How long does it take you at the moment to do 12 miles?

  • It takes about 50-minutes to 1 hour depending on conditions. The main delay is all the traffic lights when i get into zone 1 and I imagine most of the commute will be on zone 1 and 2.
  • DonDaddyD has just started a similar step up in distance. It might be worth trying to track him down on the board (probably in Commuting Chat) for his recent experiences, particularly the fatigue, additional time, fuelling, work changing facilities etc.

I think DDD always cycles the home <=> central London leg and depending on how he feels he may do the central London <=> work leg either way, or possibly take his bike on a train (as you are travelling against the flow of commuter traffic for that leg, bike on train shouldn't be a problem). If a sensible commute route takes you past a suitable station, this might be an idea.

20 miles each way may not appeal so much as the winter draws in. The bail out option at least allows you to cycle commute some of the distance and keeps you active on the bike - it is less likely to become a chore if the option is there (even if unused).

in terms of helping with route - can you be a little more specific with location?
