OT: Do you think.....

That if I close my FB account, I will cease to exist?

Some of my "friends" on FB, I have not seen in 30 years. Some people, I don't really class as friends. As I am a man manager, I refuse to make work colleagues friends, even though they send me requests (I may have to fire them!) - I also don't add work contacts as friends, although I have had requests.

I am not particularly interested in a great percentage of the updates I see - they are clearly vain attempts to be funny and mostly fail. I used to use it for organising rowing events/teams - but I don't do that anymore.....so why bother?

Remind me again why I am on there? I think I should close my account! In fact, when I can log in on a PC I am gonna investigate closing it....

As someone who doesn't have a FB account, does that mean I already don't exist?

Mankind managed for the previous few millennia just fine without it. I think you'll be OK.

my facebook rule is that I only have have 'friends' on there that I am currently in contact with.

I don't want to add people just because I met them once.

I find it useful for sharing photos and things, but to be honest, i turn down 75% of friend requests.

I also de-friend people for throwing sheep at me.

You don't like it, so close it down.

I like the "casual acquaintance" aspect of facebook. My close friends I don't need any website's help in keeping in touch with. My wider circle of friends it is very useful for staying in touch with.

Most updates from my friends are trying to be funny too, but they mainly succeed.

I've considered deleting my Facebook account, since I hardly ever use it -- I'm far more of a Twitter person (@wwwicked). But in the end, I always end up leaving the account there; I tend not to log in to it very often, but it's there on the infrequent occasions I find a use for it.

I closed my down recently; the language (pedant and foul) was just too much me and for some people nothing is too trivial to share and comment on, on FB.

Deletion is easy - follow the prompts, don't touch it for a week or two and it's gone. I haven't missed it one jot since I did. Wife keeps hers active to keep an eye on Boy Sr (13) just in case.

I think I'd do that in real life too.

I opened an account purely to access one event related site and have spent ages since having to call up remote friends and family apologising to them for ignoring their freindship requests - I do not book my face.

I was best man at a friend's wedding last year - and he opened up a laptop at his wedding breakfast to update his status to 'married' FFS.

unfortunately as a 24year old who was at uni when it started to blossom it has actually become a legitimate form of communication. as a result i only respond to messages and invites from my smart phone and treat them as a form of text message.

I wouldn't go that far. The internet is the greatest single repository of porn the world has ever seen. That must count for something.

I've decided that the whole myfacetwatterbookpingthing.com is bollox.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

  • I'm not 15, not at Uni, in my early 40's, and I'm not planning to close mine at all.

I used to think like most of you here, and I kept rejecting invites. Until one day, out of the blue I got an invite from an ex classmate, with whom I used to be best mates in school. I could not possibly say no! So that's how I got in.

People seem to concentrate on the bad things that Facebook has. For me, it's been a tool to get back in touch with people I had lost touch with, keep in touch with current friends, very important since I emigrated. I only accept invites of people that I know personally, nobody else. And I have different privacy settings for different people. It's not that difficult.

If somebody "spams" constantly with stupid things, I remove them. Easy.

Used properly, it's a great thing. At the beginning, you will practically live on it. Once the novelty wears out, it's back to normal use of the internet.

I don't use facebook half as much as I used to, to be honest now I only use it to download photos, status updates are rare and to be honest I think once I have started my new job and not in contact with over half of the people on my facebook 'friends' the account will be pretty much dormant apart from a few Sea Cadet related colleagues.

Jake refuses to have a facebook account and he has had facebook, MySpace etc banned from his crew room computers because his crew were spending more time on facebook than on their work. He is firmly of the opinion that he has survived 41 years without facebook so why does it need it now. I understand where he's coming from to be honest,

    .

I find twitter even worse for trivial tat. log on now and the vacuous tripe about the x factor will overwhelm you.
