I'm planning on a ride near Langsett Res though I haven't been on those trails before. Cut Gate is a name I've heard off - but cn anyone help me plot something around 15miles?
Cheers

I'm having a go at this route on Saturday, probably end up walking the climbs but want to try new stuff.

We ride there fairly regularly, have done a similar route to above. If the OP just does an out and back route to the stream crossing then that would be circa 15 miles.
    I'll describable our route.

IMO this is ideally suited to a fun hardtail...
Ride over the dam (Midhope Cliff lane), slight up hill. Look for a bridleway on the right that skirts the woods. Follow this till it forks, take the left. Come to tarmac and some farmhouses, take the little entry between them and at the bottom turn right and follow the trail
This will lead to a gate at the top of the climb, turn left ]before[ the gate (some ruins on the other side of the gate, called North America)
Follow the trail over the moors, leads to a junction (fork and small green sign) take the left (straight on in effect) and continue up to Margery Hill, lots of deep ruts (central line usually works) and follow this down, eventually turns to rocky singletrack and a great descent to the stream Go a wee bit further and you'll come to a wooden bridge...

Stop, admire the scenery and eat.

Turn round, hikeabike back up and reverse the route, except where you joined from the left originally (remember that green sign?). Continue straight on down fast rocky singletrack, one last steep little climb and then a rocky blast back to the river.
    Follow signs back to Langsett

  • Ratty - thanks for all that info! I've struggled to follow your directions on the OS (bikehike).
I've put together the following; From Langsett Res ; Barnsley Boundary walk; Far Small Clough and along to Derwent Res; Beside Howden Moors to Margery Hill, Cut Gate and home. Do you know any of these tracks?
Craig, thanks for the link - didn't work. It made me search for GPX routes and I found a whopping 32miler :)

IMO, after doing Cut Gate on the way back, when you get to the green sign the descent to the right is smooth and fast which is a nice contrast to all the rocks you've just done! Did this ride last monday but from the Ladybower side, just went out onto Cut Gate, right at the green sign, looped around the farm ruins and came back.

    You can't miss it.

Where Ratty said This will lead to a gate at the top of the climb, turn left ]before[ the gate (some ruins on the other side of the gate, called North America) I'd probably go through the gate, continue on until the path splits right and left, go left and follow the track up to the green sign (you can't miss it, it's on a large post), go straight on to do the Cut Gate out and back then when you come back to the green sign turn right and follow the swoopy downhill back to the gate.

You can't ride the path along Far small clough. It's a footpath not a bridleway for starters but if that doesn't bother you it really is unrideable you will spend more time with the bike on your shoulder.Featherbed Moss and Bleaklow although having paths shown on a map are hit and miss and notoriously boggy.
Cutgate can only really(legitimately) be done as an out-and-back from either Langsett or Fairholmes(Ladybower)or if doing a loop the way you're thinking carry on down to Glossop and up Doctors Gate  which is around the 40mile mark, and generally done the other way around.
There are "cheeky" paths over the top along the length of the reservoirs but are mostly a bog in all but drought conditions.
  • ibbo - you are possibly a life saver. I will replot in a bit. Cheers

Its about 14 miles as an out-and-back if you drop down Cranberry Clough to the stream and then turn around .You don't really feel like you're covering old ground on the return, and you get a long blast back down to Langsett woods 8)
It's possibly the only out-and-back that feels completely different both ways 8)

Yes from Lansett Barn.I can do you a gpx file if you have a GPS?
I've just run the out-and-back through memory map and it's only 11.5miles but packs in just over 2000ft of ascent.
There's the option of adding on a steady 8 miles down the side of the reservoirs to Fairhomles and back if you want a longer ride.

Like it as a sort of figure of eight myself. Cross the dam, climb up to north america, through the gate, past the ruins, turn left and of up cut gate path itself. I usually turn back at the cairn, I'm too much of a girl for the descent to Slippery Stones, and it saves on the push back up :D Then turn right at the sign and descend down to North America. Turn left through the gate again, then instead of turning left onto cut gate, turn right and head down to the woods. This bit of trail is awesome, really mega rocky and fast, one of my favourites. Mind the climb after the river though. You can then follow the signs for a gentle spin back through the woods to the carpack while the adrenaline wears off :D

This way round you start the climb on the smooth surfaced bit and descend down the ruttier more natural path back to North America. The other way is great too though, but in a different way, the descent is much faster and swoopier but less technical that way round.

Either way you'll have great fun.
  • Definatley one for the rocky techy stuff - I think the bike will feel a little under nourished without something tough to throw at it.

I'd appreciate any GPX tracks - i use GPS and plot my rides on bikehike.

But I can't find this North America on the OS maps where am I looking?

Not got an OS to hand... May help some, could be just marked as ruins....
If you take the footpath at the top of the pics out of the carpark, it save riding on the very busy road.
Through the squeeze barrier, basically turn left along the path, come to a small gate, turn right over the dam.
The third pic down show the bridleway that skirts the woods...

  • Brilliant, found the picture of North America.
Gonna makes some Scotch pancakes, then finish planning the route, then in a few hours I'll be heading out to ride Cut Gate.

Probably too late for the gpx now
North America (ruin) is only shown on 1:25000 OS and not 1:50000

So did you find it in the end?
  • I haven't yet Ibbo :) I've been tryong to work out a loop but I'm gonna take the advice of the Forum and do an out and back this week. I'm now out of work so I have some time off.
I'm now based in Lincoln, so it's a bit of a drive but to be honest, I think I'm gonn have to base all my rides on a drive to sheff or Notts now! I'll type back when I've done it with my official verdict :)

    No PM come thorough
  • Here's some information on the ride from Langsett Barn, there's a GPX and map on there.

It's a really good ride, best saved for reasonable weather though. It gets a bit wet up at the top.
