Hmmm - blonde Swedish birds in rally cars. Where do I sign up?

theres a vauxhall advert running over here at the moment which shows loads of clips of old vauxhall adverts, that thing reminds me of this:

Do you get paid for scrutineering or do you do it for the exposure to fast cars and blonde birds? :)

Good plan. Last time I was in Stockholm the ugly bus had taken all the mingers away while I was still sober.

A souped up Viva ! , great cars though, chevettes were a good laugh. My mate had one and I had a Opel Manta at the same time. We liked to pretend we could drive, even though we were really quite crap

Almost. Vauxhall Firenza but that does look like a space frame version.

  • Nice job! Would love to be able to do that. Always go nosing around during scrutineering and at the service areas. The engine bays confuse the feck outta me though, so much stuff that i have no idea about. But I love the smell of the cars!

Damn i wish i was going on Sat but the thought of a three hour drive each way just to see them run by twice seems pointless.

So, basically, the reason I did not live out my childhood ambitions, is because Nick selfishly stole ALL of them?
    Damn you, Nick.

The scrutineering sounds interesting though. What kind of stuff do you have to check in the engine bay? Plumbing, roll-cage reinforcing, that kind of stuff?
Or do you also have to keep an eye out for "illegal" parts?

Excuse my ignorance on the matter, I have no idea what level of scrutineering this level of rally involves, but I do remember watching the RAC rally cars being pretty much stripped to every last nut and bolt in Chester, years ago. Oh, and that crazy illegal turbo in the Toyota Celicas that was only discovered when it stuck open in a crash - throwing doubt on years of victories.

That Turbo is probably one of the most amazing things ever to dorn a motor vehicle.
it makes you wonder what other kind of cheating things have gone on in the past?

in F1 there is loads, like flexi floors and wings etc but rallying i imagine it would be harder to tell?

when it got hot (as turbo's do) the Fins and the chamber expanded to give more capacity giving more ooomph. the turboss at the time were restricted in sice or capacity if i remember correctly?

That's the one. I thought it was more to do with airflow than heat, but I could well be wrong. I was pretty young at the time and my memory of the details is hazy.
The design would measure up perfectly at rest, and would be undetectable, BUT, when one was found stuck open in a crashed car, it was revealed to be a very VERY clever cheat.
It's still not known, as far as I know anyway, how long they were using these turbos, or if anyone else had a similar system. Also, if the turbos were modified like that, how much of the remaining car(s) was set up to break the rules?

My mate from a few years ago got his hands on an experimental M5 from germany, its one of the ones that should of been scrapped. under further investigation he found that it had oval pistons! Unique i think? i remember it being bloody quick but he drove like a loony and i never liked that. i keep my speed to the track.
