Rear spacing

Hi all,

I'm thinking of picking up an old steel frame & then sticking some decent bits on it - i'd ideally love to have one custom built as I like the old style lugged steel frames but unfortunately this isn't gonna be feasible... soooo, on searching classifieds etc. what rear spacing do I have to look out for & are there any other obvious glaring old-new compatibility issues I haven't thought of?

Ta much!

    Modern frame spacing is 130mm - 8, 9, 10 or 11 speed, typically late-80s onwards
    6-7 speed are 126mm , typically 70s to mid 80s
Earlier and you're looking at 120mm for 5 speed

2000-ish was when it went to 1.125" aheadset - earlier will be 1" threaded fork steerer i.e. quill stem.

Your decision is whether you're going for modern or contemporary parts will dictate compatability
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

A bit before 2000 there was 1" ahead as well.

Might not be for you but I really like the business idea.
I may be a minority of one but that doesn't prevent me from being right.

Cheers for the replies - i'd be keeping the componentry fairly modern so I guess i'll be wanting a 130mm rear end, don't really mind whether or not it's 1" or 1.125" but quill stems look better on old frames so i'll probably look for a 1". To ebay Batman!

2Phat4Rapha - yeah I like that business idea, i'll probably end up with a similar end product only with the skint knuckles & oily fingernails from doing it myself!

    Cheers
