I have a 2001 Specialized Rockhopper Comp.
It is ok apart from the front brake is pretty much totally broken, and the silver metal bit that guides the the chain at the front (derailleur?) is bent, so it doesnt change gear well.
On the plus sides, the headset, handlebars, stem, pedals, rear brake, forks (rockshox judy?) etc are all OK.
The frame is 17" which is way too small for me (need 20"-21")
I have a budget of about £400-650 to spend on a bike.
What would you guys do in my position? Buy new or buy custom and take off the bits i already have?

A) that frame is not 17" its a 19" at least.....
If you need a 21" frame you must ba about 10 foot 9.
C) A budget of £450 - £600 will get you a nice bike, but im unsure you require it at this time. Spend £120 on a set of SLX brakes, replace the front mech, but some new tyres and ensure the gear cables are new and set correctly then go out and enjoy it, Will cost you a hell of a lot less than £450……0 -
Yeah, that is a tall frame. Are you struggling for reach?0

The seat on my 17" is about an inch past the 'do not raise past here' line, which is as much as I dare.
Im about 6'1, but I have long legs and long arms. (My inseam is ~90cm)
So either way I need a new frame.
It's just whether thats attached to a new bike or my old parts!0 -
You could fix your current bike for not a lot. But if you're unhappy with the frame, then that's at least £150 straight away. Then you start thinking well I've got this nice new frame, I should really get some new forks to do it justice. New wheels. Etc. Then there's potential compatibility issues.
Personally, I'd get the wallet out and go for a new bike. You'll get something brand new, bang up to date, and there's plenty of good deals around for your budget.
Then you can do what you like with the rockhopper. Shopping bike. Pub bike. Commute bike. Sell it...0
