What bikes?

I've been trying to get my wife into this cycling malarkey to which I've nearly had an agreement, so onto the next step looking at bikes.

Imagine my horror when she suggested putting a child seat on the back of my £2000 carbon TT bike!!!

Can anyone recommend 2 cheap bikes (his and hers but preferably not matching). They'll have a baby seat on the back and probably be used for short (less than 10 mile) jaunts mainly on country lanes with the occasional tow path thrown in.

Not looking for anything too fancy - my wife hasn't ridden a bike for 15 years. Just something along the halfords/decathlon route would be fine but probably less than 200 for the pair?

Rutland Cycling are doing the Kona Smoke on eBay for £199 delivered.

Its a steel framed utility bike, mudguards included, rack mounts, fat tyres for comfort, stealthy paint. I just bought two to use for pub trips and shopping round the city so we can save our road bikes for what they are best at. (Unfortunately, g/f and I now have a stable of 9 bikes between us  , but all of the others are too good to leave outside city pubs and restaurants).

I reckon they would be ideal for the use you are looking at and seem to be a great bargain (Rutland told me they bought the entire remaining UK stock - the bike is discontinued this year).

  • Evans sale would be one place to look.

Oh... and look at WeeRide or BoBike mini or similar, before you buy a rear-mounted seat.
Better weighted. And a far more conversational ride to boot.

Also - make sure she likes her bike. Otherwise, she'll be less likely to want to ride it. Here's SWMBO with hers... shortly after her test ride when she said "I'm in love"
