Tips for getting into pedal clips

My new road bike has toe clips on the pedals. No bother with primary leg, but I am having trouble getting my secondary foot inserted in the clip. Maybe one attempt in 4 will be successful. Any tips on how to get the foot in more reliabily ?
I may have to consider clipless pedals.

it's all technique and practice.
Just get used to flipping the pedal around and sliding your shoe in. Just do it loads every time you ride for the next few weeks, you'll soon get used to it.
Or, go clipless (Then again, i had a massive problem clipping in the other day, i made it all the way around a roundabout and 25metres down the road before i managed to get my foot clipped in.. Every now and then i fail at clipping in).0 -
Put a little bit of weight in it, and angle your foot forwardSay... That's a nice bike..

Remember you can still pedal with your connected foot. Might sound daft but the number of times I used to connect my right foot and faff with the left foot, lose all momentum and stop is too numerous. Eventually learnt that I could keep going with just one foot. The other thing is to not panic, it will connect.0

+1 for practice Practice practice!!
It was weird for me when I first started with toe-clips, especially as the only footwear I owned were skater style trainers which are chunky as hell!!
Id advise that you use your time with clips getting used to the mental process of using clipless as im certain that you will eventually upgrade...
I went as far as actually turning my left heel outwards to mimic the action of SPDs, and found that when I did take the plunge, I didnt have one of the comedy clipless moments.0
