It's all part of Cavendish's cunning plan. Let Farrar beat him a couple of times and then the Yanks will do all the work for him at the Worlds. Or maybe not.

Very unusual for Cav to misjudge a sprint like that, it seemed he was way back coming into the last km and then when he reached the front he just kept going. Possibly going for surprise as all the action was on the other side of the road at that point?
  • Looks like Columbia didn't have enough guys up front in the last 3 kms so Cav had to sit back in the bunch a bit. It was almost a Robbie McEwan moment when he appeared on the left, unfortunately he went far too early. Think he'll get it right next time....

  • 2 theories on Cav making a mess of it ...

He either is sorely missing his train, he'd have def. won both of those sprints with Renshaw there ...

    or

He's gaining experience and stamina for the last 500m of the Worlds, where he will have no team or lead out ...

Or a third theory, he just misjudged the distance - it happens! I don't think the lead out is an issue, he showed in the Tour that he was just as good without one.
  • My guess would be that he got spooked because he had found himself quite a way back, and so jumped as soon as there was a gap

Seems Matt Goss got a flat with 5km to go and Cav had no one to lead him out in the final stages. So he just went for it on his own. Couldn't hold on long enough and was beat. Simple.

Brilliant video clip-Inside the Mind of Mark Cavendish.
Because I love Cav for his mind, of course. Nothing to do with wanting to get inside his trousers.

Although, I was chuffed for Farrar today. Surprised Cav didn't get the win, but pleased it went to Farrar after all his attempts to beat Cav. JV's probably having to peel him off the ceiling of the team hotel this evening, he'll be beside himself with glee.
  • Cav totally isolated just misjudged it and went too far out - looked to have great legs to be honest. Not as if he got swamped by the pack.

Freire saving it for the Worlds again?
  • Great video clip.
Cav came from so far back in the bunch, it shows his speed that he actually hit the front at all. Getting third was a result under the circumstances.
