Just did the Blackpool ride the lights. Totally traffic free, thousands of riders. It was quite a surreal experience and I'm amazed that I didn't see even one crash, bearing in mind how many people were there. It's the nearest I'll ever get to riding in a peloton.

If youv'e never done it, I'd recommend it. Every kind of bike and every age group there, great atmosphere

I was there with two of the three kids (both of whom this morning paid the price for a late night).

A really enjoyable night. Like the OP I can't believe either how many thousands of people were there and how there aren't more crashes. Almost every upright second involved a near miss of some description.

Anybody see the young lad on the unicycle?

l live quite near so usually squeeze in Blacpool Illuminations run from Squiresgate to Cleveleys and back run when the clocks change in October when it goes darker earlier .DIY is not really recommended for kids but the run is totally possible DIY inspite of traffic.. In parts its best to push it.cos of bottlenecks, construction works near the tower...Theres a cyclepath on the prom but i think it does behind some of the displays..

  • I would say I dragged the family to "Ride the Lights" but that would really be a horrible lie!

I have to say it was really enjoyable, even if I was towing the little one with the trailgator! (must teach her to pedal faster!! ) my 3 enjoyed it.

Longest they've slept in all summer hols!! Unfortunately I had to go to work today :(

My only comment is next year have the road closed till 11 as if like us you stopped for a bit to let it get darker to see the lights properly then you could end up with 10mins left of the road being closed by the time you've done the circuit. Love to know how many tab-bards sky gave out as I believe they ran out quite quickly at the bispham end..

But I'll see you there next year hopefully I will be chasing the little one rather than towing her then! :)

  • I was there on holiday (no bike!) as a spectator, saw quite a few spills, mostly kids, nothing serious. It looked like good fun and nice to see the lights on before the official switch-on. I still managed to swipe a Skyride bib :D
