First Peak District ride

Did my first ride in the Peak District on Sunday and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Bought the White Peak Mountain Biking book and did a 17.5km loop from the High Peak Trail, over to Middleton. It wasn't an Epic by any stretch of the imagination and I didn't break any speed records, but it gave me a taste of what the Peaks have to offer and I definitely want more.

Whilst the scenery is breathtaking, the climbs were a bit of a shock to the system, but worth it for the descents on the other side.

One thing that also struck me is how remote it becomes once you leave the roads, riding alone, I was conscious that I could get myself in trouble if I came off.

I've thought the same thing about the remoteness. If I'm on my own, I tend to only go on trails I think other people might be using too.
  • Hi Guys
Going to do the High Peak trail this weekend, also riding alone so I am sticking to the more well known trails and paths. Starting at Parsley hay and riding the High peak trail both ways to allow me to get used to a bit of medium distance. Loving the ride.

  • High Peak trail / Tissington trail is a great flat run ideal for training, i do now and again it's like a rough road for doing speed exercise

In fact, if you wanted to get adventurous you can join HP trail and Tissington trail via Carsington waters, it's a great excursion and you take quite a lot in with a mixture of quiet back roads and whatnot, and Carsington is an eye opener for folk who've never heard of it (me, before the other week). The entire loop back to the car park is 40 miles, if you sprint it, you'll know you've had a ride. 8)
  • If you want really great riding head up to the Dark Peak... Chinley, Hayfield, Edale and flanks of Kinder.... epic moorland scenery, top rocky technical riding and some cracking pubs (Old Hall in Whitehough, Derbyshire and East Midlands Pub of the Year)... makes the climbs in the White Peak look like kiddies stuff though. :D
  • true but you're probably better easing yourself into it all rather over facing yourself and putting yourself off for life
  • I'd like to see Chinley Churner get up Pounder Lane in Bonsall.

There are some routes and, probably more usefully, descriptions of trails in the Carsington area on the Brassington website. Follow the Linkity Clickity below.

New Mills ? ... then you're perfectly placed near some of the best riding in the Peaks :)

    Look here for route suggestions:

Or if you can use *.mmo or *.trl files, try this site:

There's plenty of options to vary these routes, or select bits to tailor your own route.

i'd snag a copy of that, there's some cracking little routes around the hayfield / new mills area and when you get more adventurous you can go further afield with it.

White Peak version is handy too.

Just did the White Peak Pure trails "Ashover single track special" after not being on the bike for about 8 months.

Bought a Decathlon Rockrider 9.1 a short time ago and decided it was worth the run out to give it a proper test. Only been on the local reclaimed railway track until then....

Well all I can say it got the lungs working, didn't know how unfit I was !!

1000 feet of uphills over the 11Km route soon told me.. i seem to think in my head, that I am as fit as when I raced in the eighties on the road. Now at 48 I need to work at it I think.... (A great deal !)

Must try a few more now and need to practice my bike handling. The 9.1 performed faultlessly, much better then my old Marin Hard tail..

Just need to improve the rider now..

Right, whats next in the book.....
