Barry Island is...

...finished, dead, deceased, gone-to-meet-it's-maker.
In it's heyday, early 60's - mid 70's, it was THE place to go bank Holiday weekend.
But, after a lovely meal at Guilliano's, near the Ship pub, drove around the "Island."
Almost totally desterted, few late night drinkers, chavs, but generally,dead...
Think that "Barry Butlins" closing was the first nail in the coffin, cheapo Spanish hols number two and our crap S.Wales weather the final nail.
Remember Summer days there where you couldn't move on the beach and my Great Gran, "Madam Toleda", had a Palm Reading/Psychic booth there for years. She was good too !
Sad, sad end to the traditional British seaside holiday experience.

yeh but it was Barry island....
I mean the place was a dump back in the 80's when i were a lad, and it only got more chavy and naff the older i have gotten0 -
Yeah, but where else could you see Rockers smashing Mods, Skinheads fighting, or drunken teenage girls with hardly any clothes on...for FREE?!
I vaguely remember seeing it in 1963, and the sea was frozen.
Maybe God was trying to send a message, that "Hell" does freeze over, lol !0 -
Possibly
Barry couldn't be much differnet to hell to be fair but that could just be cos I'm a llantwit lad and I'm biased lol!0 -
*turns round in chair to view Barry Island out of lounge window*
Yeah, it has gone down hill recently. Agree the closure of Butlins was a catalist, however more recently it's been the 'spat' between the owner of the fairground and the Vale of Glamorgan Council, which has resulted in the fair being pretty much closed down.
Also the Council 'stopping' the Railway preservation society running the steam train's from/to the island has also been detrimental to the island's demise. (That said, there's a Vintage Vehicle/Train event on teh 18th/19th Sept)
TBH, we tend to spend more time down there (on the beach) in the winter than the summer. It's really quiet then.0 -
Barry Island was HEAVING the other day.
The beach there is actually really nice....its just the fair ground is utter shite.0 -

Can't they cast it adrift into the Brizzle Channel and let it float out to mid atlantic?I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

There's even a website dedicated to the inhabitants of Barry:

sadly porthcawl is not the same place I went on holiday to as a child either. I adored the caravan holidays in the 80s, much more than the breaks in spain. but when i go there nowadays and the same goes for barry, it just seems so shit and messy. I'll hold on the the memories. much betterCrafted in Italy apparantly0

Porfffff-call was a great place as a kid, Happy Valley caravan site.
Remember the whole family going there mid 60's. Hot, HOT weather, scorching.
Heavy thunderstorms at night - very atmospheric/spooky - and firework displays at dusk.
Bet the WHOLE holiday was around £50 all-in. Inflation, eh?0 -
